Job Description
BASIC FUNCTION:
Riverside City College is seeking an Assistant Professor, Philosophy who will carry primary responsibility for lecture, laboratory and/or hybrid instruction in Philosophy courses typically taught at the community college level.
Candidates will be prepared to teach courses such as Critical Thinking and Analytic Writing, Logic, and Ethics, as well as other introductory philosophy courses, with the proven ability to show how these topics are relevant to students' diverse contexts. While candidates may have any AOS or AOC, they should be able to demonstrate creative and effective teaching methods that reflect current best practices for a student-centered, inclusive, and engaged classroom. Those with experience employing innovative pedagogy both in-person and online are encouraged to apply.
The ideal candidate will be equity minded and eager to work with a diverse student population and will be experienced in culturally-responsive pedagogical practices for engaging African-American, Latinx/Hispanic, Native-American, and Pacific Islander students, which are historically underserved. The ideal candidate will also possess experience teaching philosophy with a passion for promoting the relevance of philosophy in cultivating critical thinking, ethical reasoning, and communication skills essential for success across all academic disciplines. Those with experience teaching philosophy rooted in indigenous cultures or other underrepresented world philosophies are encouraged to apply.

We currently enroll over 30,000 students, the majority of whom are from racially minoritized populations. EDUCATION:
Master's degree in philosophy; OR Bachelor's in philosophy AND Master's in humanities or religious studies, OR the equivalent. Candidates with a Ph.D. in Philosophy are encouraged to apply. (All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions).
EXPERIENCE:
Must have demonstrated commitment to culturally responsive, inclusive, and innovative teaching. Minimum of two years of classroom teaching experience in Philosophy is required. Teaching experience at the community college level is preferred.
The ideal candidate should have (1) experience and expertise in culturally responsive teaching in Philosophy, particularly as it relates to the relevance of Philosophy to students' lives, interests, and communities; (2) recent experience working with historically underserved students in the classroom; (3) an understanding of how historical patterns have shaped the experiences and representation of these students within higher education; especially how real or perceived exclusion can shape patterns of participation and outcomes; (4) a willingness to examine and refine instructional, relational, and classroom practices to more effectively engage and support various groups of marginalized students; and (5) experience and skill with addressing issues of equity in the classroom.
The candidate will also demonstrate knowledge of the implications of the Hispanic-Serving designation for institutional, departmental, and instructional practices.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
The successful candidate will, among other things:
- Fulfill the duties of a full-time instructor, including, but not limited to, holding weekly office hours and completing 24 hours of "flex credit" through various available activities and seminars, inclusive of 8 "flex" hours dedicated to equity.
- Lecture and/or conduct laboratory classes in the discipline(s) assigned as part of the instructional assignment.
- Participate in student learning as well as course-level and program-level learning outcomes assessment work.
- Fulfill faculty assignment, which is based upon the assumption of a workload of forty hours weekly, including but not limited to: conducting classes, class preparation, student evaluation, office hours, committee work, curriculum and program development, learning outcomes assessment, program review, student activities, and other duties per the bargaining unit agreement.
- Complete institutional service activities as is expected of all faculty members.
- Participation in discipline/department decision-making processes and work regarding curriculum, program development, Improvement of Instruction, and other professional matters is expected.
- Responsibilities also include maintaining standards of professional conduct and ethics appropriate to the professional position.
CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- Ten-month, tenure-track position.
- Salary is commensurate with academic preparation, and full-time teaching or equivalent experience with a range from Column C, Step 1 to Column H, Step 6 of the current Faculty Salary Schedule.
- Medical and dental benefits are provided for the employee and legal dependents.
- A $50,000 life insurance policy is provided for the employee.
- Orientation to college is required as is adherence to Improvement of Instruction policy.
- Maintaining broad knowledge of the academic or occupational area and design pedagogy related to learning outcomes is expected.
- Responsible for all other conditions of employment required of full-time faculty members such as a willingness to be involved in District and College promotional activities, active participation in college committee work, student activities and other support services, and appropriate professional activities.
