The Department of Civil Engineering (CE) at Boise State University invites applications for a full-time nine-month tenure-track faculty position at the assistant professor level beginning August 2026. The priority application deadline is November 1, 2025. We seek an innovative researcher and educator specializing in structural engineering, with primary consideration given to candidates whose scholarship and teaching align with this field. In research, candidates are expected to maintain a balance of independence and collaboration development with colleagues within CE, the College of Engineering, and/or the University. Candidates with research expertise in all areas of structural engineering are welcome to apply, including, but not limited to, ones with specialties in the areas of interest to Idaho and the Western United States, such as novel hybrid structural design, performance optimization, bridge engineering, climate adaptation and hazard (e.g., wildfires) resilience, natural and manmade hazard (e.g., wildfires and earthquake) mitigation, building information modeling (BIM), structural health monitoring (SHM), the application of AI/ML in structural engineering, innovative structural systems, sensor networks, and the Internet of Things.

This position could contribute to an interdisciplinary, multi-institutional and multi-year initiative on energy-water system resilience. Such work includes regular engagement for the NSF and State-funded I-CREWs project with collaborative research, meetings, and potentially other activities. An example area of focus could include hydropower systems. Department overview

The Department of Civil Engineering at Boise State University has approximately 270 undergraduate students and 25 graduate (MS) students. Two interdisciplinary PhD programs, one in Engineering and one in Computing, are available to the civil engineering faculty for recruiting PhD students. Ten faculty members provide inclusive and engaging educational and research experiences to develop sustainable and resilient engineered and natural systems.

Preferred and Required Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • By the time of appointment, candidates should have earned a Ph.D. (or similar terminal degree) in Civil Engineering or a closely related field, focusing on structural engineering.
  • Ability to obtain PE license in the State of Idaho within three years of hiring date

Preferred qualifications

  • Industry experience and teaching experience in higher education
  • Record of, or potential for, securing extramural funding to support research activity and producing scholarly publications
  • Current Professional Engineering (PE) license in any U.S. state, with the ability to transfer to Idaho
  • Ability to teach existing structural engineering courses, such as Mechanics of Materials, Principles of Structural Engineering, and Civil Engineering Materials Laboratory
  • Ability to develop new technical/design elective courses in structural engineering.

Salary and Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience.

Our standard faculty contract is a 9-month contract (unless otherwise noted) with pay and benefits spread over 12 months. This is a yearly, renewable contract, unless noted that the position is temporary. More information about faculty contracts and work days is available here.
