Assistant Professor, Tenure-Track Faculty Position in Research, Measurement and Evaluation
Department of Educational and Psychological Studies, SEHD
University of Miami
The Department of Educational and Psychological Studies in the School of Education and Human Development at the University of Miami is actively seeking a tenure-track Assistant Professor specializing in the dynamic intersection of human-computer interaction, user-centered design, human-AI collaboration, and modern computational and statistical modeling.
This position is particularly well-suited for an innovative researcher who brings conceptual depth and applied insight to designing and evaluating intelligent systems, emotion-aware technologies, and digital learning environments. We are especially interested in candidates who design and study adaptive and emotionally intelligent systems, develop novel experimental methodologies, and lead interdisciplinary research with clear societal relevance.
This position will be filled based on finding the best available candidate with the greatest potential for continuing long-term research, scholarship in the field of measurement and educational statistics and its intersection of human-computer interaction, user-centered design, and human-AI collaboration.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate a strong track record in advancing innovative, user-centered research at the intersection of human-computer interaction, human-AI collaboration, and computational modeling. They should show evidence of mentoring undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students through inclusive, design-oriented, and interdisciplinary approaches. In addition to scholarly excellence, the candidate is expected to teach in both in-person and online formats, with the ability to make complex concepts in user experience research, experimental design, and computational methods accessible and engaging across diverse learner populations. Strong communication, cross-disciplinary collaboration, and translational presentation skills are essential.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct pioneering research at the nexus of human-computer interaction, AI-mediated communication, and emotion-centered technology design.
- Apply advanced quantitative, experimental, and computational modeling methods in user experience and behavioral data analysis.
- Integrate design thinking and HCI principles into RME and SEHD academic programs, helping to position UM as a hub for ethically responsible and user-aware data science education.
- Teach and mentor undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral students in areas such as HCI, UX research methods, mixed-method experimental design, data storytelling, and interactive systems evaluation.
- Collaborate on externally funded research initiatives and contribute to a vibrant community of grant-seeking scholars across disciplines.
- Engage in service activities at the program, department, university, and professional levels, including support for diverse learners and inclusive pedagogical practices.
Required Qualifications
- A Ph.D. in Information Science, Human-Computer Interaction, Educational Psychology, Data Science, or a closely related field by December 2025.
- A strong record of peer-reviewed publications and national/international conference presentations in human-computer interaction, human-AI collaboration, or UX research.
- Demonstrated experience in teaching and mentoring at multiple levels (undergraduate through doctoral), including experience supporting student research.
- Evidence of engagement in external and internal grant-funded projects.
- A commitment to justice, equity, and inclusive excellence in both research and pedagogy.
Preferred Qualifications
- Expertise in computational modeling techniques relevant to emotion sharing, human-centered design, and virtual teamwork.
- Experience developing AI-driven or conversational systems for workplace or educational settings.
- Familiarity with industry partnerships, crowdsourced platforms, or user-centered product development.
- Applicants must demonstrate a strong track record in all aspects of academia, including teaching, research, and service, with a specific emphasis on securing external funding. This includes: (a) conducting scholarly research and publishing, (b) teaching at both undergraduate and graduate levels, including online instruction, (c) providing guidance and mentorship to doctoral, master's, and undergraduate students, (d) securing extramural funding, and (e) participating in professional service activities relevant to the academic rank they are being considered for, in accordance with the University of Miami's policies for hiring tenure-track faculty.
