Assistant Professor Trombone/Jazz
Job Summary
Reporting to the Chair of the Fred and Dinah Gretsch School of Music, the Assistant Professor of Trombone/Jazz will be expected to:
- Teach Applied Trombone and/or other related courses;
- Direct the Georgia Southern University Jazz Ensemble;
- Actively recruit potential music majors;
- Attend faculty meetings for the School of Music, the Instrumental Area, and other committee meetings as assigned;
- Serve on jury and recital hearing panels; and
- Fulfill other teaching duties as assigned.
This is a tenure-track position, and the salary is competitive and commensurate with qualifications and experience.
Required Qualifications
- Earned Doctoral degree in Music Performance (Classical or Jazz), an area of Jazz Studies, or a closely related field by August 1, 2026 with at least 18 graduate semester hours in Music Performance (Classical or Jazz) or Jazz Studies.
- Record of notable experience and demonstrated excellence as a performer in both traditional (solo and orchestral) and jazz styles (emphasis on jazz improvisation skills)
- Strong knowledge of pedagogical concepts and literature appropriate for all levels of student abilities for both performance majors as well as music education majors
- Evidence of successful teaching of applied students at the undergraduate level.
- Evidence of success leading a jazz big band.
- Willingness to engage with institutional student success initiatives.
- Commitment to engaging with best practice initiatives in instruction and pedagogy, mentoring, and curriculum design and development.
- Demonstrated commitment to advancing a strong and growing research and scholarship agenda and the production of research/creative activities as appropriate to the discipline.
Preferred Qualifications
- A minimum of three years experience in undergraduate teaching.
- Ability to teach Brass Methods/Techniques.
- Ability to teach jazz improvization.
- Experience organizing/running a jazz festival.
- Ability to design curriculum, specifically for a jazz concentration degree.
- Evidence of successful teaching of applied students at the graduate level.
- Evidence of jazz arranging.
Proposed Salary
Commensurate with experience. This is an exempt position paid on a monthly basis.
