Assistant Professor, University Medical Line, Dept of Cardiothoracic Surgery

There has been significant growth in thoracic aortic surgery and transcatheter aortic and valvular therapies at the Palo Alto Veterans Affairs Health Care System. There is a programmatic need to recruit a cardiothoracic surgeon with expertise in these areas to join the Stanford faculty in the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery at Stanford University as an Assistant Professor in the University Medical Line at the Palo Alto VA. There will be robust opportunity to participate in thoracic aortic surgery, valvular surgery, and other subspecialty areas in adult cardiovascular surgery at the Palo Alto VA. There will be occasional clinical coverage responsibilities at the Stanford main campus and at other Stanford-affiliated sites.

There is a great desire to develop an integrated research program related to thoracic aortic diseases at the Palo Alto VA. Thus, this individual will also be specifically tasked with conducting basic science, translational, and engineering research in innovative aortic and cardiovascular therapies with the goal of developing an independently funded laboratory. The individual will also be involved in surgical resident and medical student education.

The major criteria for appointment for faculty in the University Medical Line shall be excellence in the overall mix of clinical care, clinical teaching, scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine, and institutional service appropriate to the programmatic need the individual is expected to fulfill.

Individuals appointed as Assistant Professors will have completed their house staff training and, where appropriate, postdoctoral fellowship training. They must demonstrate excellence or promise of excellence in the overall mix of contributions in clinical care, teaching and scholarly activity that advances clinical medicine appropriate to the programmatic need upon which the appointment will be based. There should be evidence that candidates have the promise to attain regional recognition for excellence in the overall mix of contributions. If these individuals have not had formal teaching experience, they should have demonstrated during their house staff and fellowship training a commitment to teaching, and they should have the potential to meet or exceed acceptable standards in teaching.

The successful applicant must be board-eligible or board-certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery, as well as residency-trained in Cardiothoracic Surgery. We expect the successful candidate to develop an active clinical practice, be an active teacher of medical students, residents, and fellows, and to develop a robust research program.

How to Apply: Candidates are asked to submit CV, a brief letter of inquiry and the names of three references via http://Facultypositions.stanford.edu/cw/en-us/job/494939?lApplicationSubSourceID=. For questions, please contact Eunice Lin, Faculty Affairs Administrator, Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery, at elin94@stanford.edu.

Expected Base Pay Range: Assistant Professor: $300,000 – $365,000. This pay range reflects base pay, which is based on faculty rank and years in rank. It does not include all components of the School of Medicine’s faculty compensation program or pay from participation in departmental incentive compensation programs.
