Salary range: The UC academic salary scales set the minimum pay determined by rank and step at appointment. See the following table for the current scale for this position. A reasonable full-time salary estimate for this position is $88,000-$92,200.

Percent time: 100%

Anticipated start: January 2027

Position duration: The initial appointment is for three years with the possibility of an extension based on performance and the availability of funding.

Position description

Weisz's research group is located in the Astronomy Department at UC Berkeley. The group consists of a research staff, postdocs, graduate and undergraduate students broadly studying the stellar populations of nearby galaxies with a variety of cutting edge facilities (e.g., HST, JWST, Keck). The group interfaces with various research programs at Berkeley (e.g., DESI, UVEX) and works closely with simulators and theorists to interpret results.

Under the supervision of PI Weisz, the candidate will help with preparation for the spectroscopic survey of massive stars as part of the Ultraviolet Explorer (UVEX) mission. These duties include assistance in planning observations, simulating datasets, obtaining and analyzing complementary datasets, writing up reports, contributing to publications, and attending internal team meeting, and presenting results and plans to the broader community.

Qualifications

Basic qualifications (required at time of application)

PhD (or equivalent international degree)

Preferred qualifications

  • PhD in Astrophysics, Astronomy, Physics, or a related field
  • At least 2 years of post-doc experience
  • Demonstrated knowledge of massive stars and ultraviolet spectroscopy of stars and galaxies is preferred.
