In coordination with the overall efforts of the Environmental Health & Safety Department, the Assistant Radiation Safety Officer (ARSO) performs duties specific to the Radiation Safety Program in providing ionizing radiation safety services to researchers using radioactive materials and radiation producing machines. The ARSO also serves as backup to the RSO, ensuring continuous compliance with federal and state radiation safety regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Maintains Center-wide radioactive materials inventory control program, ensuring laboratories do not exceed their assigned possession limits
  • Performs monthly contamination surveys and quarterly sealed source leak testing in laboratories utilizing radioactive materials. Reports contamination survey and leak test results to researchers and the RSO.
  • Responsible for maintaining Fred Hutch shared use hot lab for Center researchers
  • Consults with Center employees in a positive and pro-active manner regarding recognized and potential radiation exposure hazards
  • Calibrates portable survey instruments used in monitoring laboratories for radioactive contamination
  • Performs periodic dose calibrator linearity tests, accuracy and geometry checks
  • Manages the daily and routine operations of the Radiation Safety Program, including scheduling of surveys and audits, leak tests, calibrations, air emissions reports
  • Provides training for radioactive materials users, irradiator uses, hot lab and Radiation Suite users and one-on-one training as needed for lab workers
  • Coordinates emergency response with RSO
  • Part of the EH&S emergency response team
  • Provides shipping expertise for radioactive materials shipments
  • Acts as RSO in the RSO's absence
  • Coordinates training for Radiation Safety Technicians
  • Provides initial review for all Radioactive Materials Use Authorization (RMUA) submitted.
  • Maintains documentation as required by radiation safety program
  • Works with State of Washington Department of Health during inspections
  • Provides review and comments on regulatory documents and proposed regulations
  • Maintains Radioactive Materials Database
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in health physics, or related scientific field, and one or more years of professional experience in the practice of radiation safety in a research setting; or equivalent combination of education and experience essential to the successful performance of the duties assigned to the position.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop programs and make professional judgements based on health physics principles.
  • Technical proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software, and database development and management.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Three or more years of professional experience in the practice of radiation safety in research setting.
  • NRRPT or CHP Certification
  • Master's degree in Health Physics, Engineering, or Science
  • Equivalent experience can substitute for degree requirements

The annual base salary range for this position is from $88,712 to $133,057, and pay offered will be based on experience and qualifications. This position may be eligible for relocation assistance.This position is not eligible for H-1B sponsorship at this time.Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center offers employees a comprehensive benefits package designed to enhance health, well-being, and financial security.
