Since its establishment in 1905, the Department Anatomy has grown to become one of the largest departments in the University of Otago. Our department makes major contributions to the undergraduate and postgraduate education of students in science, medicine, dentistry, pharmacy, physiotherapy, medical lab sciences, nutrition, and physical education. We are committed to excellence in both teaching and research. We also have a number of internationally recognised research groups led by experienced academic staff.
Te mahi | The role
As an Assistant Research Fellow in our department, you will contribute to the research objectives of an externally funded research programme from The Royal Society Te Apārangi Marsden Fund “Molecular and cellular organisation underlies the asymmetric regeneration of sensory axons”.
Key tasks of the role include:
• Experimental design and laboratory research.
• Performing DNA cloning experiments.
• Performing biochemical assays (e.g. western blot, immunoprecipitations)
• Preparation and maintenance of cell cultures.
• Performing and analysis of immunocytochemistry.
• Performing imaging experiments.
• Ensuring all laboratory facilities run smoothly and efficiently in support of the research.
• Record keeping, result tabulation and basic data analysis.
• Assistance with literature searches and manuscript preparation.
• Other laboratory tasks, as required.
Kā pūkeka me kā wheako | Your skills and experience
The successful candidate will have:
• A postgraduate qualification in neurobiology, cell biology, biochemistry or similar.
• Experience in neurobiology, cell biology or a closely related field is highly desirable.
• Confocal microscopy and immunocytochemistry skills.
• Experience with cell culture.
• Willingness to learn primary neuron cell culture.
• Experience with DNA cloning and biochemical assays.
• A thorough approach to laboratory practice, accurate record-keeping, attention to detail and compliance with all regulatory requirements.
• Ability to work cooperatively with a wide variety of people within a research environment.
• Ability to work independently, without direct supervision, set priorities and allocate own timetable.

This is a full-time (1 FTE) fixed term position (15 months from 1 July 2026 to 01 October 2027) appointment, located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The appointment range to this role is $62,496 to $84,125 per annum.
