The role | Te mahi
We are looking for a skilled Mechanical Engineer with boiler experience to join our team. You will play a key role in maintaining and optimising boiler and steam systems and associated plant equipment to ensure safe, efficient, and reliable operations.
You will provide professional advice to clients on all mechanical engineering trade matters while repairing, maintaining, altering, or carrying out new Mechanical Engineering or other associated work as directed. You will carry out physical supervision of Mechanical Engineering trainees and actively promote communications across all trade groups ensuring a comprehensive maintenance service is undertaken.
In addition to the above, other tasks include:
• Ensure that all works carried out meet the University’s quality standards and meet all Mechanical Engineering regulatory requirements.
• Ensure compliance with all relevant pressure vessel and boiler safety regulations.
• Contribute to resolution of ongoing code of compliance issues and building warrant of fitness items for Property Services.
• Ensure that the University of Otago buildings and utilities are a safe environment in which to study and work.
• Co-ordinate with Facility Managers on the installation and maintenance of services within buildings.
• Provide accurate record keeping and documentation.
• Undertake after hours or emergency works which is managed by an on-call roster system.

We are looking for a qualified mechanical engineer who has experience and practical and sound knowledge of the mechanical engineering sector, including boiler, steam and heating systems. You will be a flexible, adaptable and collaborative person with the ability to develop and maintain professional relationships. You will be a result focused, critical thinker and problem solver, with a strong client focused service ethic.
Other key skills include:
• Effective communicator with the ability to write clear, user friendly documentation for business purposes.
• Capable of using technical business software, ability to grasp new processes and technologies.
• An extensive overall knowledge of the construction industry together with relevant technical expertise or NZQA qualifications relating to running boilers and maintaining associated industrial plant.
• Comprehensive experience and understanding of the Building Act, Mechanical Engineering standards, regulations and other regulatory requirements relevant to the duties of this position, including Health and Safety requirements.
• Full drivers licence.
• Hold a current First Aid Certificate (training provided).

This is a full-time (40 hours week), permanent position located in Ōtepoti, Dunedin.
The appointment range for this position is $71,385 to $85,902 per annum.
