Assistant Supervisor, ICM
Position Summary
Under the guidance of, and reporting to, the Executive Director of Husbandry Operations, the Assistant Supervisor directs the day-to-day care of laboratory animals housed within the facility. This includes leading morning meetings with husbandry staff, coordinating with the Executive Director on staffing needs, and ensuring that operational priorities are met. The role focuses on providing high-quality service to investigators, supporting the ongoing education and development of husbandry personnel, overseeing facility maintenance needs, and ensuring compliance with all federal, state, local, and institutional regulations and guidelines. The Assistant Supervisor must demonstrate leadership, sound judgment, and professionalism when interacting with the research community and ICM personnel. Lead a team of five technicians to ensure adherence to established husbandry and sanitation standards. Candidates must possess solid understanding of biohazard containment and regulatory requirements, and the ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse environment.
Responsibilities
- Schedule, monitor, & supervise the husbandry & sanitation duties of husbandry technicians ensuring program & facility compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines.
- Provide comprehensive training for new hires, including documentation of training progress to support decisions regarding retention or dismissal.
- Initiate, conduct, document, and monitor progressive disciplinary actions—when necessary—in a timely, fair, and consistent manner.
- Maintain and verify the accuracy of employee timesheets for biweekly payroll processing.
- Facilitate research activities by offering expertise to facility users in husbandry techniques, operational procedures, and related resources.
- Participate in required weekend supervisory rotation.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree, or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience required.
Preferred Qualifications
- Minimum of two years of experience working in a laboratory animal facility. AALAS certification is preferred.
Other Requirements
- Excellent communication skills, both written and oral. A commitment to supporting high-quality research while maintaining full regulatory compliance is essential.
