Description
The School of Public Affairs (SPA) in the Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions at Arizona State University (ASU) is conducting a search for one full- time Assistant Teaching Professor to teach courses on ASU campuses in Downtown Phoenix, Tempe, Glendale, and online. This is a non-tenured, benefits-eligible fiscal year (12-month) faculty position that will begin July 1, 2026 or August 16, 2026 (depending on availability). Research is not a formal expectation of the position for purposes of promotion. Candidates should have a record of accomplishments in teaching and mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students, preferably in the fields of public administration, public policy, or emergency management.

A successful candidate will be able to teach a substantial course load within our undergraduate and graduate programs across modalities, mentor students and adjunct instructors, contribute to program assessment-related activities, and participate actively in School life through committee service, program events, and other collaborative initiatives. The salary range for this position is $78,000 to $85,000, depending on experience.

The Watts College of Public Service and Community Solutions, located on ASU’s Downtown Phoenix campus, is home to the School of Public Affairs and three other schools focused on strengthening communities and advancing public service. SPA has a rich and active research and teaching culture within a unique and dynamic setting that strongly values research and teaching in public policy and public administration. This is evidenced by an energetic, productive, and collaborative group of faculty with deep and broad expertise in a range of areas in public policy and public administration, and a student body whose intellectual and professional interests span multiple areas of policy and management.

The School of Public Affairs’ program is ranked #11 in the nation in US News and World Report. US News and World Report also ranks 7 of SPA’s subfields in the top ten in the nation, and 2 subfields in the top 20. A unique attribute of SPA is that it is home to several research centers offering a broad range of collaborative and engagement opportunities. Degrees offered include BS degrees in Emergency Management and Public Service and Public Policy; master’s degrees of Public Administration, Public Policy, Program Evaluation and Data Analytics; and Emergency Management and Homeland Security; and a PhD in Public Administration and Policy. Essential Functions

  • Teach a 4/4/2 course load (Fall/Spring/Summer) at the undergraduate or graduate level, delivering excellent in-person, online and/or hybrid instruction.
  • Provide service contributions to the school, college, university and profession.

Required Qualifications

  • A PhD in public administration, public policy, emergency management or related field from an accredited institution by the time of appointment.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills.
  • Consistent with ASU’s Charter, a demonstrated commitment to inclusion
  • Experience teaching undergraduate and/or graduate courses, preferably in public administration and management, public policy, leadership or a related field

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience teaching in-person, online, and/or hybrid courses – utilizing best practices.
  • Work experience in a field related to public administration, public policy, and/or non-profit management.
  • Demonstrated experience with technology/course management systems and using innovative pedagogical tools.
  • Experience mentoring undergraduate and/or graduate students.
  • Experience developing, refining and/or assessing curriculum.

  • Applicants are expected to give a demonstration of teaching, if invited for an interview.
