Job Summary
Auburn University College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applicants for an Vet Lab Animal Assistant position in the department of Lab Animal Health (LAH). This individual performs a variety of tasks related to the veterinary care of animals under the auspices of the animal resource program.
LAH is the primary unit providing care for traditional laboratory animal species, used in research and teaching programs at Auburn University. LAH operates under the authority of the Dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine and oversees 3 animal facilities dedicated to laboratory animal care.
Essential Functions
- Assists veterinarians and researchers with research related medical and surgical procedures to include examinations, surgery and sample collection.
- Collects samples for the purposes of animal research, medical care and animal health surveillance.
- Performs rounds of animal facilities for the purposes of health monitoring and post-approval monitoring of animal research activities.
- Observes and records vital data, abnormal signs, body weight, and food/water intake of animals.
- Triages animal health, behavior and welfare problems reported by animal care staff. • Assists veterinarians with preventative and case based medical care of animals.
- Operates, maintains, repairs and cleans equipment and laboratory and animal procedural areas.
- Administers medicine, routine vaccinations and other treatments as prescribed by veterinarians.
- Inventories and maintains supplies.
- Participates in training of investigators in the areas of animal handling, sample collection and procedures.

Depending upon the combination of education and experience, the selected finalist will be hired as an Assistant, Vet Lab Animal and assigned level I, II, or III.
Level I: requires some college, vocation, or Associate’s degree in Animal Science or related scientific field with no experience.
Level II: requires some college, vocation, or Associate’s degree in Animal Science or related scientific field with 2 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.
Level III : requires some college, vocation, or Associate’s degree in Animal Science or related scientific field with 4 years of experience in the care and comfort of animals.
Substitutions Allowed for Education:
When a candidate has the required experience, but lacks the required education, they may normally apply additional relevant experience toward the education requirement, at a rate of two (2) years relevant experience per year of required education.
Substitutions Allowed for Experience:
When a candidate has the required education, but lacks the required experience, they may normally apply additional appropriate education toward the experience requirement, at a rate of one (1) year relevant education per year of required experience.
