Position Overview

The Associate Chaplain for Christian and Interfaith Life provides religious, programmatic, counseling, and educational support for members of the Christian community at Carleton College.

Carleton is seeking a Christian leader who will promote interfaith life for all on campus, contributing to its on-going strength and development by serving as: a religious leader, community builder, educator, supervisor, and program coordinator for religion and spirituality. Chaplains work collaboratively, with students, faculty, staff, parents, alumni, and members of the wider community.

The Associate Chaplain for Christian and Interfaith Life is a part-time, average 20 hours per week, year-round, benefit eligible position.

Compensation

The expected starting salary range for this position is between $43,100 and $44,500. The salary range has been prorated based on the part-time nature of this position. Actual pay will be adjusted based on job-related factors permitted by law, such as experience and training; licensure and certifications; market factors; departmental budgets; and responsibility.

Department Overview

The role of the Carleton Chaplaincy is to help deepen the spiritual and ethical life of the campus. We provide students, faculty, and staff with opportunities to explore the integral relationship between faith and learning, connecting the work of the mind with the heart and soul. We serve people of all faiths as well as those exploring spirituality in their lives.

Essential Job Functions/Responsibilities

  • Plan and help lead Christian holidays and services, religious and cultural events, while working closely with the other chaplaincy staff, Christian groups on campus, and individual Carleton faculty, staff, and students.
  • Advise Christian student and employee religious groups, helping them plan for events, programs, or worship.
  • Initiate programs and events for the nurture and education of the Christian community and the campus at large.
  • Work collaboratively with campus constituencies in advocating for the needs of students who identify as religious and help to implement appropriate supports including coordination with dining services, residence life, and other departments and individuals.
  • Supervise the Christian Interest House and the House Manager, helping to coordinate applications and programming.
  • Participate in Carls for Religious Understanding (CRU), a biweekly interfaith dialogue student group.
  • Nurture positive relationships between the College and local communities of faith.
  • Counsel and support Christian students, faculty, staff, parents, and alumni.
  • Respond to emergencies as needed, including hospital visits.
  • Contribute to the chapel’s role as “Conscience of the College,” informed by values of inclusion, equity, and community.

Additional Job Responsibilities

In consultation with the College Chaplain, additional responsibilities may be assigned.

Describe Supervision Received and Exercised

  • Meet regularly with the College Chaplain to assess and plan.
  • Meet regularly with the Christian Chaplain's Associates (student peer leaders), Christian House Manager, and the Christian student leadership to assess and plan.

Required Education/Experience/Skills

  • Master's degree in a relevant field, or in the process of acquiring a master’s degree in a related field.
  • Ordination preferred, but not required.
  • Professional experience relating to chaplaincy, religious work, or work with young adults.
  • Demonstrated aptitude for dealing with confidential and sensitive issues.
  • Familiarity with a diverse higher education environment and with developmental issues of young adults.
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.
  • Experience working within interfaith and multifaith contexts.
  • Ability to work positively with those in the college community regardless of a person’s race, color, creed, ethnicity, religion, caste, sex, national origin, marital status, veteran status, actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and expression, status with regard to public assistance, documentation status, disability, or age.
  • Schedule flexibility to allow for evening or weekend hours.
  • Must have the ability to understand and follow written and oral work instructions, operations, safety procedures, and hazardous labels.
