Role Summary

Community Based Medicine (CBM) is a strand in the MBChB programme during which students learn about medicine from a Primary Care perspective and develop consultation and clinical reasoning skills. The majority of CBM teaching occurs on placement in General Practices across the West Midlands and beyond. Please see the following for background information: Teaching Opportunities - Community Based Medicine - University of Birmingham. However, due to pressure on placement capacity some teaching is delivered in the University, which complements the placement activities.

The post holder is responsible for ensuring all elements of the content, structure, delivery and assessment of CBM meet University and General Medical Council standards. Whilst primarily having responsibility for a specific year of teaching delivery (co-lead for the final year programme initially), the post holder will also make a substantial contribution to the strategic development of the CBM component across all years in the context of vertical and horizontal integration within the MBChB programme.

It is a high level, strategic post and requires the post holder to work with relevant professional services staff as well as other academics to produce, develop and integrate CBM teaching materials and assessments. This will include developing and delivering curriculum training to new and experienced tutors on the CBM programme.

The post holder must be able to deliver face to face, large, and small group teaching sessions on a regular basis throughout the academic year for clinical year students (teaching for year five begins in July).

The post holder is responsible to the Academic Lead for Community Based Medicine and will work with other CBM team members including the Educational Development Specialist and the CBM Academy team. The post holder will initially share joint responsibility for delivery of the year five course delivery with a co-lead.

Person Specification

  • Demonstrated excellence in learning and teaching, management and administration.
  • This is a clinical academic post and as such the post holder should be a practising GP (MBChB, MRCGP) and be fully registered with a licence to practise with the GMC and participate in clinical appraisal and revalidation. It would be desirable for the post holder to have postgraduate qualification in Education e.g. PGCert or higher qualification.
  • Excellent IT skills are required.
  • For this role, the post holder should be available on Fridays to deliver the Year 5 clinical teaching days.

Informal enquiries can be made to Louise Hammersley, email: R.L.Hammersley@bham.ac.uk
