Research Associate

Imperial College London - Department of Brain Sciences

Location:London
Salary:£49,017 to £57,472 per annum
Hours:Full Time
Contract Type:Fixed-Term/Contract

Placed On: 28th October 2025

Closes: 27th November 2025

Job Ref: MED05484

Location:

Department of Brain Sciences, Division of Neuroscience, Imperial College London, Hammersmith Campus.

About the role:

We are looking for an enthusiastic Research Associate to work on an exciting project in the field of Neuroscience.

The Di Giovanni laboratory investigates the molecular signalling and transcriptional mechanisms that control axonal sprouting and regeneration. Given that neurological recovery and axonal regeneration are not possible following a spinal injury, understanding how the re-growth of injured axons is controlled is key to enhancing axonal regeneration and potentially functional recovery. Axonal signalling and metabolic control seem important for modulating the complex gene expression program necessary for the regrowth of an axon. However, the role of environmental factors in signalling and metabolic pathways in axonal regeneration remains obscure.

You would be working on a grant from AMRF which aims to manipulate metabolism and immunity in neurons and myeloid cells to promote cellular and molecular mechanisms. We believe this will facilitate the wound healing process as well as axonal growth and synaptic plasticity, with the goal to foster functional recovery after spinal cord and nerve injuries.

What you would be doing:

You will work on the research programmes of the AMRF project and the wider outputs of the group. You will be expected to generate data of high quality that can be submitted for publication to high-profile refereed journals and to attract external research funding.

You will take the initiative in the planning of research, whilst directing the work of the small research teams. You will motivate and support individuals helping to identify and develop suitable techniques, and apparatus, for the collection and analysis of data.

Whilst conducting data analysis, you will always ensure the validity and reliability of data, maintain accurate and complete records, producing reports for research sponsors. Data will be presented to both colleagues, and at conferences, promoting the reputation of the group, the department and college. Developing key contacts and research collaborations both within the wider community and within the college are essential.

What we are looking for:

  • You should hold a PhD in Neuroscience, Cellular/Molecular Biology, or a closely related discipline, or equivalent research. Candidates who have not yet been officially awarded their PhD will be appointed as Research Assistant.
  • You should have practical experience within a research environment and using techniques related to neurobiology, metabolism and immunology. Experience with in vivo research is desirable, but not essential. It is essential that you can work independently and collaboratively. You should have knowledge of gene expression analysis and practical experience working in a busy laboratory.

What we can offer you:

  • The opportunity to continue your career at a world-leading institution and be part of our mission to continue science for humanity.
  • Grow your career: gain access to Imperial’s sector-leading dedicated career support for researchers as well as opportunities for promotion and progression.
  • Sector-leading salary and remuneration package (including 41 days off a year and generous pension schemes).
  • Be part of a diverse, inclusive and collaborative work culture with various staff networks and resources to support your personal and professional wellbeing.
