Associate Dean - Education & Student Success

The College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking an innovative Associate Dean for Education and Student Success capable of advancing the professional education program. The Associate Dean will articulate a vision for preeminence in veterinary education to further The Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine as the model learning community where we prepare confident and competent graduates for careers of excellence in all areas of the profession.

The Associate Dean leads, inspires, and manages a team of two assistant deans and directors who are responsible for staff in offices and programmatic areas including admissions and recruitment; career counselling and professional development; curriculum development, delivery and management; quality assurance of the educational experience; outcomes development, assessment and reporting; student academic support; student health, wellbeing and accommodations; and financial aid. The Associate Dean provides oversight of the Teaching mission in the college through leadership of the Advancing Education and Student Success area of the Be the Model strategic plan.

The Associate Dean position requires a DVM degree or equivalent veterinary degree and will hold either a tenure-track or clinical-track faculty appointment in one of our three departments, reporting directly to the Dean.

The Associate Dean is responsible for collaborating, mentoring, and leading the following offices, committees, and programs in collaboration with the Assistant Dean of Student Success:

  • Admissions and Recruitment The Office of Admissions and Recruitment is led by the Director of Admissions, the office delivers active recruitment and pipeline development for the professional veterinary program including career fairs, K-12 visits, college visits, Vet-for-a-day Camp among other activities. The Associate Dean will assist the admissions committee in development of policy and strategic direction for admissions, developing materials for the admissions process, training for file reviewers and interviewers, and quality assuring the admissions process.
  • Scholarship Offers - Assisting the Director to ensure prioritization of the Protect Ohio initiative that desires 60-70% of the entering veterinary class be from Ohio in 2026-2027 and beyond. Along with the Assistant Dean for Student Success, the Associate Dean conducts orientation to the college for incoming new students and those transitioning to the senior clinical year.
  • Professional Success - The Office of Professional Success is led by the Director, the office focuses on delivery of professional development curricular threads and career counselling. This service provides career management support to students and alumni and hosts annual career fairs for employers.
  • Academic Standards Council - Supporting and serving as a resource as they make progress decisions, consider and award supplemental privileges, and decide on readmissions and reinstatements. Alongside the Assistant Dean for Student Success, the Associate Dean helps the Academic Standards Council bring forward their decisions to the Executive Committee for consideration and then acts to operationalize the decisions that are made.
  • Student Judicial Processes - Supports the process to investigate honor code complaints and conduct Student Council hearings when necessary and assisting to bring Student Judicial Council decisions to Executive Committee for consideration as well as support students on probation and those undergoing remediation, and maintain appropriate records.
  • Health and Wellbeing - Ensures necessary accommodation is acquired for learners that need them. They coordinate with Student Life and Disability Services as well as legal services, as necessary. The Associate Dean and Assistant Dean for Student Success support the health and wellbeing of students by coordinating vaccinations, supporting wellness initiatives and engaging counselling support.
  • Events Management and Oversight - Supports the Assistant Dean and their administrative support, to help plan and execute the student events for the college such as Orientation, White Coat Ceremony, Oath and Hooding, Ambassador appreciation, Peer tutor appreciation and Why OSU weekends. They also oversee the student ambassador program, student organization involvement within the college including all non-affiliates.

The Associate Dean is responsible for collaborating, mentoring, and leading the following offices, committees, and programs in collaboration with the Assistant Dean for Education:

  • Instructional Development and Oversight - Supports the teaching and learning mission of the college including instructional design, quality assurance, outcomes assessment and monitoring, student performance reporting, academic support, remedial support for struggling learners, and peer tutoring. They will develop strategic planning around special areas of emphasis within the curriculum (such as Spectrum of Care) and ensure implementation of quality programming for the program as a whole.
  • Instructional Assessment - Includes distance education, artificial intelligence, and other informational technologies as well as their application. With the Assistant Dean of Education, they support remedial learners and assist with those challenged in passing the NAVLE. They also provide faculty development on a regular basis and manage the teaching evaluation, teaching awards and teaching metrics system. In coordination with the professional programs office staff, the Associate Dean is responsible for oversight of enrollment, clinical and preclinical scheduling, exam administration, documentation of absences, grade entry and correction, as well as appeals processes.

In addition to collaborating with the Assistant Deans on the above, the Associate Dean will also:

  • Supervise staff that deliver the Communications and Collaboration thread of the curriculum.
  • Lead the central management of the curriculum, teaching and learning efforts, as well as programmatic support, the Associate Dean will work with the faculty to coordinate the Council for Professional Education (CPE), serving as the Vice-Chair while also leading the Year Teachers Committees (year 1-3) as Chair.
  • Work with the assistant deans, other associate deans, department chairs, and other faculty and staff, they would lead faculty oversight for curriculum management, including timely curriculum review and any necessary revision or innovation.
  • Lead quality assurance measures and ensure outcomes reporting for accreditation along with filing of interim reports and comprehensive self-study reports including collection of the Council on Education mandated survey data, American Veterinary Medical Association employment and professional data, as well as any other data reporting associated with the American Association of Veterinary Medical Colleges. They also manage other data collection and reporting regarding the DVM program as required by main campus (enrollment, performance, student conduct, etc.).
  • Coordinate student space, student enrollment, professional program budgeting, and strategic planning.
  • Manage program contracts and working relationships with partners and affiliates of the DVM program and assist with philanthropic efforts related to DVM program or students as required.
  • Serve as a member of the senior executive team in the College.
  • Serve on relevant academic, university (APAC, CAA) and national (Academic Affairs of AAVMC) committees to represent the college.
  • Serve on the Crisis Assessment Team of the college.
  • Other duties as assigned by the Dean or Vice Dean.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: DVM or equivalent veterinary degree; demonstrable oversight and excellence in one or more areas of academic or student affairs (curricular development, recruitment and admissions, administration of teaching program); proven track record as a leader; outstanding communication and interpersonal skills.

Desired: Academic or corporate administration, programmatic development, recruitment and mentoring within the profession.
