SUMMARY:
Montclair State University seeks a creative and collaborative leader to serve as Associate Dean for Research, Teaching and Engagement of the University Libraries. Montclair is a growing research university with a national reputation as a majority minority and Hispanic-serving institution with a deep commitment to public service, community engagement, and inclusion.
Reporting to the Dean of University Libraries, the Associate Dean leads a team of librarians, professional and classified staff to develop, assess, improve and promote user-focused resources and services to the campus community. While each Associate Dean position has an individual area of responsibility, both support holistic library-wide approaches to strategic planning and communication and an environment of innovation and collaboration. The successful candidate will have experience in navigating a changing environment, in motivating and leading teams, and in cultivating partnerships.
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Works in collaboration with the Dean and Associate Dean on strategic planning, action plans, policy development and assessment; assists with aligning the Libraries' planning with campus and University strategic objectives. Acts on behalf of the Dean in their absence.
- Serves on the Library Administration Team. Works with library department heads, directors, and supervisors in order to carry out administrative functions and coordinate planning and development efforts.
- Provides leadership for the Research and Reference Services, Access Services & Resource Sharing, Academic Engagement (outreach and scholarly communications) departments, setting the vision and direction for the research, teaching, and service mission of the Libraries.
- Works with faculty and staff to promote the development of specialized research support services (e.g., including digital scholarship, evidence synthesis, and research data services) and scholarly communications initiatives.
- Acts as a liaison with the Center for Teaching and Academic Innovation (CTAI), the Office for Faculty Excellence (OFE) and the Office of Research.
- Assists the Dean in the recruitment, hiring, onboarding, development and mentoring of faculty.
- Cultivates relationships with academic leadership, engages in campus-level initiatives, and fosters collaboration among the Libraries, the University and external communities.
- Oversees the design, development, and assessment of the Libraries’ reference, teaching, public services, and student success initiatives.
- Supervises and mentors department heads and other faculty/staff, fostering a culture of trust, professional growth, and shared leadership.
- Participates in professional development for the purpose of continuing education and contributes to the profession.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
- Management retains the right to add or change job duties at any time.
QUALIFICATIONS:
REQUIRED:
- Master's degree in library or information science from an ALA-accredited institution.
- A minimum of five years of experience in one or more of the following: teaching and learning, student success, public services, or research services.
- Demonstrated proficiency in supervising and motivating employees in different roles.
- Experience establishing and maintaining effective working relationships and coordinating efforts across library departments.
- Experience collaborating with campus partners and external stakeholders.
- Strong interpersonal, public communication, analytical, and problem-solving skills.
- Record of scholarship, professional involvement, and service.
PREFERRED:
- Second Master’s, EdD, or PhD in a field relevant to higher education administration.
- Experience in developing and implementing strategic plans and projects.
- Familiarity with innovative instructional formats, including online, hybrid, and alternative delivery methods.
- Experience with assessment and data-informed decision making.
- Experience working in a union environment.
- Experience managing budgets.

Salary Range
$145,000.00-$155,000.00 Annually
