Job Summary

Reporting to the Director of Campus Safety, the Associate Director of Campus Safety is responsible for managing all aspects of safety and security at the College. Safety and security operations include responding to criminal, medical, hazardous, and potentially violent incidents. The Associate Director works in collaboration with Deans, Directors, and other administrative staff to ensure that situations are appropriately addressed and that expectations for security and personal safety are met. Duties include planning, supervising, and coordinating security operations on a 24-hour basis; investigating and reporting all security issues to the Director of Campus Safety; and leading or participating in the provision of security services, including supervising, monitoring, training, and assessing the performance of campus safety staff. Administrative and functional supervision is exercised over 12–14 staff employees.

Job Duties

  • 50% - Responsible for assisting in the development, implementation, and management of campus safety and security programs and services, including, but not limited to, security, environmental health and safety, fire safety, emergency management, parking management, and student staff management. Actively participates in all administrative meetings related to campus emergencies and/or crises. Attends internal and external training courses, classes, and seminars to enhance protective services skills and knowledge. Provides training for faculty, students, and staff on security-related issues. Provides 24-hour administrative on-call coverage for all serious incidents and activities that occur within the college, promptly notifying the Director and Dean of Students in accordance with call-in directives. - (Essential)
  • 25% - Prepares shift schedules and approves leave and overtime. Assists with the budget and spending management for the Campus Safety Department. Prepares and posts the approved duty roster each week, including special events and assignments as appropriate. Ensures that all incident and operations reports are properly documented. Serves as a member of the Emergency Response Team (ERT), Campus Safety Advisory Committee, Occidental Behavioral Intervention Team (OBIT), and Campus Event Advisory Committee (CEAC). Attends and/or leads other committees on behalf of the Director of Campus Safety, as needed. - (Essential)
  • 15% - Oversees the supervision of the operations function of the Department of Campus Safety on a day-to-day basis and for assigned shifts. Works one tour of each shift quarterly to review problems and issues, inspect officers’ appearance, and address specific questions or concerns. Recommends and participates in the immediate and future training of officers in accordance with policy. Evaluates and documents employee performance, providing feedback and mentorship in collaboration with the Director of Campus Safety. Ensures staff compliance with all College and Department policies and procedures. Participates in the selection process for new employees. Maintains a good working relationship with external law enforcement officials and other related agencies to obtain and exchange information. - (Essential)
  • 10% - In coordination with the Director, interacts with outside vendors to coordinate the installation, operation, maintenance, and repair of safety alarm systems, access control systems, and emergency equipment. Oversees vendors to ensure compliance with contractual obligations. - (Essential)

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Safety Management, Security Management, Public Safety, Communications, or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Certified in first aid, CPR and AED.
  • Must possess and maintain a current valid California driver’s license.
  • Ten years of progressively responsible security or public safety experience and/or equivalent a combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of supervisory experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Google drives/folders/forms, Adobe Acrobat, Web Editing, and social media applications or any combination of productivity programs applicable to position responsibilities.
  • Demonstrated ability to be detail-oriented and thorough; skilled at anticipating and preventing potential problems and handling a wide variety of tasks with efficiency and accuracy.
  • Strong commitment to a quality work product.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate verbally, in writing and electronically.
  • Effective interpersonal skills as evidenced in the ability to collaborate with a variety of constituencies.
  • Demonstrated commitment to justice, equity, inclusion & diversity.
  • Demonstrated skill in adapting to and performing work effectively in high-volume, high accountability, confidential environment with multiple and changing priorities.

  • Knowledge of contemporary leadership and management methods to ensure employee success and achievement, and demonstration of related and applicable skills as evidenced by the ability to effectively direct, assess and evaluate performance of direct reports.
  • Ability to effectively design, define, describe and document job functions, responsibilities, tasks, and required qualifications associated with supervised positions, and the demonstrated skills in assessing candidates’ experience, knowledge, skills and abilities when hiring for vacant positions, ensuring the best choice of candidate.
  • Ability to provide employee development, training and opportunities for direct reports to demonstrate performance achievement and success; recognizing performance of both above standards and needs improvement and respond accordingly.
  • Skilled at communicating feedback verbally, in writing and electronically; and documenting performance via introductory and annual performance appraisals.
  • Skilled in developing and determining corrective employment/performance/behavioral strategies, as needed.
  • Demonstrated ability to design and execute performance improvement plans, conducting disciplinary action and/or determining the appropriateness of employment continuation.

EXPECTED HIRING RANGE: $70,304/yr-$75,000/yr

If you are offered this position at Occidental College, your final base salary compensation will be determined based on factors such as skills, education, experience, and/or geographic location. In addition to those factors, Occidental complies with applicable pay equity laws and considers internal equity among current employees when developing the final offer. Please keep in mind that the range mentioned above is the base salary range for the role. Hiring at the maximum of the range would not be typical in order to allow for future and continued salary growth. We also offer a generous compensation and benefits package.
