Responsibilities

The Full-time Associate Director of Student Life & Leadership Development is responsible for a broad range of activities that support students at the Haas School of Business. This position is service and student-oriented, with the primary goal to ensure that Full-Time MBA students receive excellent co-curricular support and superior student service. Major areas of responsibility are event planning, student services, communications, project management, and leadership development programming and advising.

  • Advises student leaders on complex and sensitive issues.
  • Brings extensive knowledge to a student-generated field of interest.
  • Supports, guides and mentors students in formulating projects related to those issues.
  • Guides students in interactions with campus leaders and represents students on various issue when appropriate.
  • Coaches student leaders on communication and leadership skills.
  • Advises, coaches and supports MBA student government leaders and MBA club leaders.
  • Plans and presents club leader workshops.
  • Creates and updates resource materials for club leaders.
  • Advises and supports student leaders in planning events and managing risk.
  • Serves as the primary advisor to key clubs managing major semester events such as conferences and case competitions.
  • Advises club leaders on fundraising and club stewardship.
  • Independently provides the full range of support services for student programs.
  • Plans and delivers MBA student support services throughout the student lifecycle from pre-orientation through graduation.
  • Contributes to student communications including email, newsletters, websites and social media.
  • Ensures existing services and programs are well-planned and organized.
  • Assesses, creates and delivers new services both in person and via new platforms as student services needs evolve.
  • Manages a large student services business or multiple services.
  • Recommends new business opportunities.
  • Participates in long-range planning and development and new initiatives.
  • Strategically plans for the current and future student services needs of over 600 MBA students annually.
  • Forms partnerships and works collaboratively with other departments within the Haas School and UC Berkeley.
  • Works with external resource providers to ensure student needs are anticipated, understood, and met with a high level of service.
  • Proposes pilots and implements new student service initiatives to meet emerging needs.
  • Independently resolves moderate complex individual cases regarding MBA student affairs or student life.
  • Advises students on health, wellness and safety issues making referrals as needed.
  • Answers questions and resolves issues related to policies regarding co-curricular activities.
  • Answers questions, resolves issues and makes referrals regarding student life outside the classroom.
  • Advises, coaches, and facilitates resolution of misunderstandings and/or disagreements between students.
  • Helps to ensure all students feel a sense of belonging.
  • Provides ongoing transformational advising and leadership development to student leaders participating in student government, co-curricular programs and/or organizations on a wide range of issues.
  • Serves as the inclusive lead for the program office supporting Consortium students and affinity clubs.
  • Educates the program office team on key topics relevant to inclusion and belonging.
  • Provides recommendations, reports, and metrics on feasibility of new and current programs that enhance the student experience.
  • Through formal survey and informal feedback on processes.
  • Continuously monitors, assesses and reports on the success of Program Office initiatives which includes: Pre-orientation processes and programming, orientation programming, program office communications to students including newsletters, websites and emails, programs and for student leadership development, student engagement and morale events and commencement.
  • Develops and maintains relationships with a variety of groups of internal and external organizational stakeholders critical to program and student success. These include those at the Haas School of Business and in the broader community as follows:

  • Administers a limited public service program providing services such as working with outside agencies to refer for student volunteer opportunities.
  • Advises and supports the MBA community service club.
  • Ensures planning and coordination of volunteer service during orientation.
  • Manages internal data systems and coordinates the recording of student service hours for volunteer recognition at graduation.

Required Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of advising and counseling techniques
  • Thorough knowledge of Student Affairs/Student Life specialization.
  • Service oriented, demonstrated ability to work effectively and collaborate with individuals and groups from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, and perspectives.
  • Abilities in project management, problem identification and reasoning skills.
  • Excellent analytical skills, demonstrating critical thinking skills in problem identification and reasoning.
  • Works independently, with minimal supervision while demonstrating excellent multi-tasking skills.
  • Must be able to establish priorities, meet deadlines, and work as part of a team.
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite & Google documents, spreadsheets and forms and can quickly and easily adapt to new technologies.
  • Flexibility to work evenings and weekends for student events.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrates active listening and displays a finesse in maintaining cooperative relationships with other departments, programs, universities, community organizations and other institutions.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, demonstrating a desire to establish and maintain positive & professional working relationships with colleagues, students and team members.

Education/Training

Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
