The Associate Editor will manage the day-to-day work of the John Dickinson Writings Project, communicating daily with the Director/Chief Editor to ensure all objectives are met. This role includes extensive editorial work on historical documents, including transcription, verification, annotation, copyediting, and formatting.
Job Description
Under the direction of the Director/Chief Editor, the Associate Editor will oversee the day-to-day work of the project, devise work plans, and ensure sponsor and press deadlines and grant objectives are met. The Associate Editor will supervise project staff (e.g., assistant editors, editorial assistants, and student workers), assign work, monitor progress, and perform quality-control checks, communicating any problems promptly to the Director/Chief Editor. Additional responsibilities include:
- Identify and collect documents for inclusion in The Complete Writings and Selected Correspondence of John Dickinson
- Transcribe documents, verify content for accuracy
- Research, write, and fact-check annotations
- Perform copyediting and record-keeping in the project database
- Format documents for print and digital publication
- Assist the Director/Chief Editor in grant proposal writing and project publicity
- Other duties as assigned
Qualifications
- PhD in early American history or related field with three years of related experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with an 18th-century/US Founding Era editing project preferred.
- Familiarity with John Dickinson and his writings
- Excellent written and oral communication skills
- Outstanding skills in research, paleography, and copyediting, as well as familiarity with The Chicago Manual of Style
- Meticulous attention to detail
