Position Highlights

The University of Arizona Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics and the University of Arizona Cancer Center seek candidates to fill a fiscal (12-month) position as a tenure-eligible or tenured Associate or Full Professor of Biostatistics.

We seek candidates with backgrounds in biostatistical theory and methods and/or machine learning and data science, with demonstrated expertise in the development of new methods as well as a record of collaborative research. We are particularly interested in applicants with demonstrated research interests in any area relevant to cancer research. A successful candidate's research should complement current areas of strengths in the Biostatistics Program and UACC as well as the broader college and university. The successful candidate is expected to develop and/or teach the equivalent of 2 courses per year, including graduate-level courses and/or undergraduate courses, mentor graduate students, and contribute to the research and service missions of the college. The successful candidate is expected to direct the Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) at UACC.

The MEZCOPH is currently the only nationally accredited college of public health in the state of Arizona. The College and University have numerous innovative teaching, research, and service programs and is a valued partner in community-based research projects addressing health issues relevant to border communities and indigenous populations.

The University of Arizona Cancer Center (UACC), established in 1978 (https://cancercenter.arizona.edu/), is one of 72 NCI-Designated Cancer Centers, one of 56 Comprehensive Cancer Centers in the nation and the only Comprehensive Cancer Center headquartered in and serving Arizona. The Biostatistics and Bioinformatics Shared Resource (BBSR) is an existing shared resource with a long history of high quality support for the multidisciplinary research teams of the UACC. The BBSR brings together expertise in experimental design, statistical analysis, genomic and proteomic analysis, biologic pathway analysis, clinical trials, statistical computing, and database applications. It is a cohesive team that can provide a single framework for all quantitative aspects of a study, including rigorous integration of statistical design and 'omics data analysis. The BBSR provides efficient statistical design, accurate data management, appropriate data analyses and interpretation, as well as innovations in statistical design and multi-'omic data modeling, to ensure UACC investigators achieve their scientific goals.

The BBSR will be led by the director with substantial support from four additional faculty biostatisticians, an MS analyst, and a program coordinator. Bioinformatics services are provided by one faculty bioinformatician and a PhD bioinformatician. Faculty expertise includes clinical trial design, cluster-randomized trials, patient-reported outcomes, survival analysis, missing data, high-dimensional data analysis, statistical genetics, multi-'omics data integration, network analysis, and algorithm development.

Duties & Responsibilities

• Direct BBSR.
• Develop and maintain a strong externally-funded and peer-reviewed research program aligning with cancer research.
• Develop and teach 2 biostatistics courses per year, which can be potentially lowered depending on UACC responsibilities.
• Supervise Masters and Doctoral students in the biostatistics program.
• Participate in intramural, extramural and outreach service.
• Develop collaborations with researchers in other departments and colleges across the University of Arizona.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ph.D. or other doctoral degree in biostatistics or strongly related field.
• Record of high-quality scientific productivity (as appropriate with rank).
• Track record of securing external research funding (as appropriate with rank).
• Teaching experience in a University classroom environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience leading research in multi-disciplinary and collaborative teams and to connect with other disciplines in research and teaching.
• Experience and enthusiasm for teaching biostatistics methods courses including methods such as causal inference and clinical trials.
• Experience teaching individuals with varying perspectives and experiences.
• Experience with the design and analysis of clinical trials in therapeutic cancer research.
• Experience mentoring and collaborating with clinical investigators.
