Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Islamic Archaeology

About us

The UCL Institute of Archaeology is recognised as one of the leading academic departments of Archaeology and Heritage in the world. It is the largest department within its field in the UK. It offers a uniquely stimulating environment with more than 60 staff pursuing high-quality research across five continents. We are at the forefront of global archaeology, conservation and heritage studies and have well-equipped laboratory facilities for archaeological science.

Islamic archaeology is a dynamic field of research and teaching at the UCL Institute of Archaeology. We have a lively research community of academic staff, postdocs and PhD students working on the Islamic Middle East, Africa and Central Asia as well as in Islamic glasses and metals and the UCL Islamic Archaeology Network runs regular events including the annual Islamic Archaeology Day. We offer highly successful modules in Islamic archaeology and heritage at both undergraduate and Masters level.

About the role

We are seeking to appoint a full-time Associate Lecturer (Teaching) in Islamic Archaeology to teach core and option modules to undergraduate and postgraduate students, to act as personal tutor to undergraduate students, to build the profile of Islamic archaeology at the UCL Institute of Archaeology, and to contribute more generally to teaching and administration as required.

The post is available from 1 January 2026 and is funded until 31 December 2028 in the first instance, providing cover for Professor Corisande Fenwick for the period when she will be on research leave as PI of an ERC-funded project and serving as Faculty Vice-Dean (Research).

About you

The successful candidate will have a PhD in archaeology, art history, or related field, with a specific research focus on the Islamic world (pre-1800). Candidates must be able to deliver undergraduate modules and Master modules in Islamic archaeology and heritage, as well as deliver and contribute to other core archaeology modules and core skills training at undergraduate and Masters level in line with their expertise.

Academic support for undergraduate students is an important part of the role. We particularly encourage applications from candidates whose teaching strengths allow them to contribute to core archaeology/ heritage modules and deliver skills training to undergraduates (e.g. field archaeology, GIS, post-excavation skills, collection management).
