Position Description

The McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery invites applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor (Clinical) and Division Director of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Montreal Children’s Hospital (MCH) of the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC). The professorial rank will be determined according to the candidate’s qualifications and experience. This will be a Contract Academic Staff position and does not confer eligibility for tenure.

The Department of Pediatric Surgery is a leader in academic medicine. Our educational and research missions support excellent and innovative clinical programs and research across our teaching hospitals. The Montreal Children’s Hospital of the McGill University Health Centre is one of McGill’s major teaching hospitals affiliated with the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences at Canada’s internationally renowned McGill University, located in the vibrant and multicultural city of Montreal, in the province of Quebec. All pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties are represented at the MCH. The Division of Neurosurgery provides a full range of surgical services for prenates, neonates, infants, children and adolescents born with congenital or acquired neurosurgical indices.

The Division of Neurosurgery provides a full range of surgical services for prenates, neonates, infants, children and adolescents born with congenital or acquired neurosurgical indices. The Division has well established strong multidisciplinary teams in neuro-oncology, dealing with tumours of the brain and the spinal cord, neuro-traumatology for the management of traumatic cerebral and spinal pathologies and comprehensive programs for the management of spasticity and epilepsy.

Job Duties

The successful candidate will be involved in the academic activities of the McGill University Department of Pediatric Surgery, Division of Pediatric Neurosurgery; they will be expected to demonstrate aptitude, enthusiasm, and excellence in education. The incumbent will be expected to have a proficient career in Pediatric Neurosurgery. Prior administrative experience and demonstrated leadership at the national/international level and/or an advanced administrative degree will be considered assets.

The successful candidate will be expected to lead the recruitment and future development of academic pediatric neurosurgery at McGill University. They would be expected to attend Departmental meetings and assist the Departmental Chair in departmental-wide mandates and initiatives. The Division is comprised of a diverse and multidisciplinary team of experts committed to providing high-quality medical and surgical services to pediatric patients, including ICU, ER, and on call coverage, while ensuring the operating room activities for the division are carried out effectively.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission, provide excellent clinical teaching and supervision to diverse residents, fellows and medical students, and pursue scholarly activities in advancing clinical care or research in pediatric neurosurgery.

Note: The successful candidate may be eligible to apply separately for one of the open endowed chairs available in the Department of Pediatric Surgery.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates must:

  • Have an MD degree, and hold or be eligible for, licensure in the province of Québec;
  • Have completed fellowship training in pediatric neurosurgery; the fellowship can be of one (1) year full clinical or of two (2) years with a year concentrating on pediatric neurosurgery related research;
  • Have a demonstrable interest in research (e.g., clinical, basic science, education) and/or in innovation;
  • A national or international career path in pediatric neurosurgery will be considered an asset;
  • Administrative experience or an advanced administrative degree will be considered an asset;
  • Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

Employee Type: Contract Academic Staff ('Academic Contractual') Rank: Associate or Full Professor (Clinical)

Salary: Remuneration will be according to Quebec health care fee schedule.

Note: For the division directorship, a stipend will be added.
