Associate Professor in Subsurface Geochemistry

The Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment in the Faculty of Science at the University of Calgary invites applications for a full-time Associate Professor (with tenure, teaching and research stream) with a specialization in geochemistry of subsurface processes. This position will build on our department's strengths in geochemistry and is expected to lead intra- and inter-institutional collaborative, interdisciplinary research programs. The anticipated start date is July 1, 2026.

Qualified applicants are expected to conduct research that investigates geochemical processes in Earth's subsurface and their impact on the (bio-)geochemical evolution of the Earth. Areas of research application should include energy and resource development, groundwater systems, Earth history, environmental remediation, or similar related fields. Candidates must demonstrate expertise in the application of geochemical principles to solve Earth, environmental science, and/or energy problems and ideally will leverage current and planned geochemical analytical infrastructure in the department and university. A commitment to integrating field, laboratory, and numerical modeling studies will be viewed favorably.

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) in geochemistry, geology, geoscience, or a closely related field. A strong record of impactful research related to geochemistry and geochemical processes at the professorial level is required. The successful candidate will be expected to establish an active, well-funded research program and disseminate research and scholarly contributions through various channels, including (but not limited to) publication in scholarly and/or industry-relevant forums, regulatory guidance and policy development, and community outreach (interviews, public and online forums, scientific social media). The university places value on diverse scholarly activities, such as entrepreneurship, scientific resource development (e.g., databases, software), and actively fostering transdisciplinary collaborations within and beyond the University of Calgary (e.g., academic, Indigenous groups, industry, government). The candidate will also be expected to play a key role in the advancement of the university's geoscience and energy research goals, including the development of shared, core research facilities.

The candidate will play an important role in training and supervision of students at the undergraduate (BSc) and graduate (MSc, PhD) level. The successful applicant must demonstrate excellence in teaching at the post-secondary level, specifically showing interest and ability to teach courses in geochemistry, geology, energy, and environmental science. Pursuit of pedagogical and curricular development in an academic setting is expected.

Additionally, the candidate should provide evidence of collegial contributions within their organization and their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusion (EDI), since they will be expected to fully engage in departmental and university service at the University of Calgary and work effectively with people from diverse communities and cultures.

Please apply online via the 'Apply Now' link on our UCalgary Careers website via https://careers.ucalgary.ca/jobs/16867433-associate-professor-subsurface-geochemistry-faculty-of-science-ucalgary. Your four application attachments should be organized to contain the following: Cover letter and curriculum vitae, including the name and contact information of three references; Statement of research interests and vision (maximum 2 pages); Statement of teaching philosophy, experience, and interests (maximum of 2 pages); Statement on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (maximum 2 pages). Applications are accepted until November 5, 2025.

Questions may be addressed to the Search Committee at earth@ucalgary.ca. The committee will be chaired by Edwin Cey, Head, Department of Earth, Energy, and Environment, Faculty of Science.
