Position Description

The Canada Impact+ Research Chairs program is a one-time initiative designed to attract world-leading researchers to address critical national and global challenges.

  • Emphasizes research excellence and tangible impact.
  • Chairs receive long-term funding and institutional support for transformative projects.
  • Focus on research translation, commercialization, and social/economic benefits.
  • Develop the next generation of highly qualified personnel.

The University of Toronto invites applications for full-time faculty positions to advance transformational research programs in strategic priority areas:

  • Advanced digital technologies (AI, quantum, cybersecurity)
  • Health, including biotechnology
  • Clean technology and resource value chains
  • Environment, climate resilience, and the Arctic
  • Food and water security
  • Democratic and community resilience
  • Manufacturing and advanced materials
  • Defence and dual-use technologies

Nominees’ research areas must demonstrably align with one or more of these categories.


Appointments

  • Rank: Associate Professor or Professor
  • Anticipated start: September 2026 – July 2027
  • Appointments will be made to an appropriate University of Toronto academic department/unit; some positions may be based at an affiliated institution.

Candidate Qualifications

Successful candidates will have:

  • Established, excellent, innovative, and internationally recognized research trajectory
  • Outstanding, independent, externally funded research program
  • Demonstrated research excellence:
    • Significant, sustained contributions and publications in top-ranked journals and presses
    • Conference presentations and professional association involvement
    • Competitive funding awards
    • Strong endorsements from high-standing referees
  • Strong record of research impact: translation, mobilization, and applications with economic or social benefits
  • PhD (required)
  • Evidence of teaching excellence: undergraduate and graduate teaching, supervision and mentoring of MA, PhD students, and postdoctoral fellows

Responsibilities

  • Undertake teaching responsibilities at one of the University’s three campuses
  • Join a vibrant intellectual community with opportunities for collaborative and interdisciplinary research
  • Engage with a highly diverse student population

Salary & Rank

  • Commensurate with qualifications and experience
  • Expatriate Canadians relocating to Canada are encouraged to apply
