Associate/Professor of Marriage and Family Therapy
The Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions, in the School of Health Sciences at Hofstra University is seeking a full-time faculty member at the rank of Professor or Associate Professor, for a tenure track position in the graduate Marriage and Family Therapy program beginning Fall 2026. An additional stipend will be provided for serving as Program Director.
The ideal candidate is engaged in scholarly endeavors with demonstrated both research and teaching excellence. An intrinsic excitement for teaching and interaction with students is highly valued. The successful candidate will have a rich background in family systems, including both research and clinical practice within a range of populations and cultural contexts.
The Program:
The Marriage and Family Therapy program, an in-person 54 credit degree program, prepares students for licensure in New York State. The program features dynamic, practice-based courses led by dedicated faculty who prepare students with the skills necessary to work with couples and families to resolve relationship conflicts. Students receive intensive academic and clinical training through theory and applied classes and an integrated internship that’s completed at the on-campus Counseling and Mental Health Professions Clinic.
The Department:
The Department of Counseling and Mental Health Professions offers six graduate-level programs in School Counseling, Mental Health Counseling, Creative Arts Therapy Counseling, Marriage and Family Therapy, Rehabilitation Counseling and Rehabilitation Counseling in Mental Health, as well as advanced certificates in Addiction and Substance Abuse and various counseling specialties, and an undergraduate minor in Human Services.
The School:
The School of Health Sciences is home to four academic departments, including Allied Health and Kinesiology; Counseling and Mental Health Professions; Population Health, and Speech-Language-Hearing Sciences. The mission of the school to educate students in the theory and practices of their specialized area of study, with a strong foundation in the natural, social, and behavioral sciences. Through competency-based instruction, field experience, and research training, students are educated to become effective and compassionate clinicians, evidence-based practitioners, policymakers, managers, and advocates who promote health equity.
Qualifications:
- Doctoral degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, preferably from a COAMFTE accredited institution. Licensed to practice Marriage and Family Therapy with the intention of obtaining a NYS license. Clinical Membership in the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapists (AAMFT). Approved supervisor status, preferred. Evidence of teaching experience (co-teaching and doctoral teaching internships are acceptable). Evidence of experience as a counseling practitioner in mental health settings (doctoral internships are acceptable). Notable achievement of publications and professional presentations and a readiness to develop research and training grant proposals. Proficiency in the use of technology in the delivery of education and an eagerness to use multiple technologies to teach and communicate with students. A broad knowledge base of the MFT field and experience with integrating family systems theory with clinical practice.
Preferred qualifications:
Preference will be given to candidates with an established record of teaching excellence, collaborative scholarly activity, mentoring students, supervising graduate students in practicum and internship coursework in Marriage and Family Therapy, and experience in community settings.
