Associate Research Scientist (High Field Superconductors & Superconducting Magnets)

Overview

We are seeking a talented and highly motivated postdoctoral researcher to support the research and development of high field superconductors and superconducting magnets. The large bore, high field superconducting magnet technology using high temperature superconductor (HTS) is a potential game changer for reducing fusion device size by increasing the allowable magnetic field, current density, and operating temperature.

The purpose of this job is to support Princeton University Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) research and development on HTS magnets cooled by advanced cryogenics, particularly in projects related to the development of high current density HTS cables for compact fusion, HTS magnets for quantum physics and other science applications. More specifically, the projects will involve designing, building and testing of novel HTS cables, coil modules, prototype assemblies to demonstrate and validate integrated high field measurability for science, compact fusion and other commercial (medical) applications. Maturing affordable and reliable HTS cables is critical for enabling next generation fusion magnets beyond ITER with advances in HTS materials, manufacturing, sensors and machine learning. High current density cables are required for the design of compact HTS magnets in a fusion pilot plant (FPP) to allow space for interior plasma components. Significant technology maturation efforts are underway by fusion startups with the goal to demonstrate mature HTS magnet technology.

A U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratory managed by Princeton University, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory (PPPL) is tackling the world's toughest science and technology challenges using plasma, the fourth state of matter. With more than 70 years of history, PPPL is a leader in the science and engineering behind the development of fusion energy, a potentially limitless energy source. PPPL is also using its expertise to advance research in the areas of microelectronics, quantum sensors and devices, and sustainability sciences. Whether it be through science, engineering, technology or professional services, every team member has an opportunity to contribute to our mission and vision. Come join us!

Responsibilities

Core Duties:

Tasks include design, build and test of novel high current density cables and coil modules to de-risk high magnetic field operation of HTS. The prototype HTS cable and coil module will be tested in a background magnetic field test facility in PPPL. The job involves conductor characterization, HTS cable RD for integrating conductor data into the design, fabrication and cryogenic testing of high current cables. The goal is to validate novel cable concepts for the development of low loss, simpler HTS magnets in FPPs developed via the public and private partnership. RD focused on prototype magnets and modular test probes is also needed to uncover novel quantum phases of matter if extended to high magnetic fields (30T), and evaluate if a quantum microscope instrument can be built.

The roles and responsibilities include:

  • Lead the design of HTS cables, sub-scale coil modules and conducting cooled modular testbed.
  • Work in an innovative team to identify potential HTS design, fabrication and operation issues.
  • Develop novel solutions of HTS magnets for interfacing test probes in Princeton University main campus to support frontier physics and chemistry experiments.
  • Participate in the design and fabrication of a modular test probe to validate HTS cable innovation.
  • Collaboration with PPPL research and industrial partners at other institutions, to mitigate project risks in developing new HTS cable concepts, building and testing the cable and model coil prototype.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Must have a PhD degree within 5 years, in engineering or physics.
  • RD experience on superconductors, HTS instrumentation or HTS magnet design is needed.
  • Solid understanding of and demonstrable experience in engineering physics or materials science.
  • Previous experience in 2nd generation HTS such as ReBCO magnet design and fabrication is a plus.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Knowledge on coil design, quench analysis, coil fabrication and operation, in particular high field no insulation HTS magnet design.
  • Experience with advanced cryocooling.
  • Ability to perform science measurements and data analysis.

Working Conditions:

  • Mostly office based.
