Associate Senior Lecturer in restoration ecology with focus on evidence-based biodiversity assessment

This recruitment is part of an excellence initiative – SLU Futures – which aims to attract and support promising young researchers within the strategic themes of Future Sustainable Plant Production Systems, Resilient Ecosystems, and One Health. The objective is to create conditions for successful research in future-oriented, strong academic environments through long-term employment.

The Department of Wildlife, Fish and Environmental Studies at SLU offers a creative and stimulating environment internationally recognized for research, education, and environmental monitoring in restoration ecology, aquatic ecology, molecular ecology, and animal ecology. The department has a large proportion of international employees and well-established national and international collaborations.

Subject area
The subject area is restoration ecology with focus on evidence-based biodiversity assessment.

Duties
The Associate Senior Lecturer is expected to develop their own research line within the subject area and will be given development opportunities to qualify as docent and Senior Lecturer. The research will focus on developing methods for measuring and assessing biodiversity, primarily in boreal terrestrial forest ecosystems, with emphasis on robust indicators beyond species richness, such as ecological resilience and ecosystem health status. Research should be conducted in close collaboration with colleagues at the department, faculty, and other parts of SLU, as well as through national and international collaborations. Additionally, the holder is expected to act in accordance with SLU’s vision, goals, and basic values; initiate the development of their own research group; apply for external research funding; publish scientific articles; participate in postgraduate education as a co-supervisor; conduct research-based teaching at first, second, and third cycle levels; receive pedagogical training; and collaborate with relevant stakeholders. Swedish and English are used in parallel, and non-Swedish-speaking staff are expected to achieve sufficient Swedish knowledge within four years.

Qualifications
Eligible candidates hold a PhD or equivalent academic qualifications, with priority for those who received it no longer than seven years before the application deadline. Candidates must be scientifically proficient in the subject area and have good ability to communicate in written and spoken English.

Assessment criteria
Assessment is based on the applicant’s scientific skill, expertise in field-based methods for assessing biodiversity (including remote sensing and molecular methods), knowledge of ecological resilience and biodiversity indicators, ability to develop an independent research line, and potential to qualify for promotion to Senior Lecturer.

Form of Employment
This is a fixed-term appointment for 4 years. The role is a career-development position, with the opportunity to apply for promotion to Senior Lecturer based on established criteria.

Application
Applications should be written in English. The deadline is 2025-09-15. Reference number: SLU.ua.2025.2.5.1-2313.
