JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Associate Vice President for Student Success provides strategic leadership for the College's student success, retention, and completion initiatives. The AVP oversees key student success units and serves as the institutional lead for data-informed retention strategy, coordinating cross-divisional efforts to improve persistence, progression, and graduation outcomes. Coordination and supervision of Student Success departments include: Academic Advising, Academic Success Center, Career Development, First Year Experience, Student Accessibility Services, and the York College Student Success Scholarship Programs.
The AVP also chairs the Retention Council and functions as the College's student success data champion, translating institutional data into actionable strategies, interventions, and policy recommendations that improve student outcomes.
- Leadership and Collaboration (100%)Strategic Leadership, Retention & Data-Informed Decision Making
- Provide leadership for Academic Advising, Academic Success Center, Career Development, First Year Experience, Student Accessibility Services, and the York College Student Success Scholarship Programs, including personnel management, budgeting, assessment, and strategic planning.
- Serve as Chair of the Retention Council, providing vision, direction, and accountability for institution-wide retention and completion initiatives.
- Lead the development, implementation, and assessment of a comprehensive retention strategies, aligned with institutional priorities and enrollment goals.
- Partner closely with Institutional Research, Enrollment Management, Student Life, Academic Affairs, the Registrar, and Information Technology to:
- Identify key persistence and progression metrics
- Analyze student success data and trends
- Develop dashboards, reports, and predictive indicators
- Recommend evidence-based interventions and policy changes
- Regularly present retention, progression, and completion data to senior leadership, campus stakeholders, and governance bodies.
- Collaboration & Academic Partnerships
- Work collaboratively with academic departments, department chairs, and deans on curricular requirements, academic policies, and student success initiatives.
- Serve on Academic Senate committees and other campus-wide committees related to student success, retention, scheduling, transfer students, data governance, and the first-year experience.
- Partner with the Registrar's Office to review and recommend policy and process improvements that remove barriers to student persistence and timely degree completion.
- Systems, Technology & Assessment
- Oversee implementation, optimization, and campus adoption of student success technologies (e.g., Starfish early alert and degree planning tools, placement and readiness systems such as Stemify).
- Ensure student success systems are used strategically to support proactive outreach, coordinated care, and early intervention.
- Promote a culture of continuous improvement and assessment across student life and success units.
Qualifications:
- Master's degree required
- Minimum of ten years of progressively responsible experience in higher education administration, with a strong focus on student success, retention, or completion initiatives
- Demonstrated experience using data, analytics, and assessment to inform strategy, resource allocation, and program design
- Direct experience in one or more student success functional areas (e.g., advising, academic support, accessibility services, first-year programs)
- Strong understanding of student development theory and practice in retention and graduation initiatives.
