Asst Professor Educator of German Studies, Department of Asian, East European, and German Studies

About the Program in German Studies

Founded in 1900, the program in German Studies offers a BA, minor, and MA in German Studies. The curriculum provides a comprehensive introduction to German language, literature, and culture, offering something for all students, ranging from those new to the study of the language to native speakers. Regularly-taught courses address German culture, cinema, literature, and folk tales. The program is housed within the Department of Asian, East European, and German Studies (AEGS), whose mission is to contribute to global education on campus, engage people across societies and cultures, and gain an appreciation for multiple perspectives. The program develops student skills in writing and communication, critical thinking, and intercultural competence, enabling its students to succeed in a diverse global environment.

Of particular interest to the program is linking the historic mission of German language and culture education to contemporary global interchange, transnational issues, and the role of media in these relationships. Music, video, photography, performance, poetry, games, and other media, including VR environments and machine learning, are conceived of as integral to the program’s curriculum. Students in the German program co-create knowledge about these media using both analog and digital means.
