Essential Functions

Job Summary

Oversee all facets of learning services programming and staffing. Provide direct strategic instruction to identified student-athletes with learning exceptionalities or other academic needs. The position will work collaboratively with colleagues to develop individualized academic plans and coordinate study hall, student success coaching, and tutoring services.

Develop individualized academic plans to provide compensatory strategies and support student-athletes toward becoming independent learners. Provide instructional intervention with assigned caseload of at-risk students with student techniques and strategies to improve self-efficacy and learning outcomes. Assist with educational assessments, evaluations, and testing referrals while interpreting diagnostic reports and collaborating with the James Bodenstedt Student-Athlete Academic Center, Athletics Sports Medicine, and the UTSA campus.

The position is expected to use judgment and discretion in the position, and ensure appropriate and accurate academic programming to maintain academic progress, academic eligibility, and timely degree completion.

Core Responsibilities

  • Adheres to the University, American Conference, UTSA Athletics, and NCAA policies and procedures.
  • Maintains knowledge of department activities, sports schedules, and procedures.
  • Fosters cooperative working relationships with fellow staff members within the department.
  • Supports the athletics department goals and philosophies as described by the Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics and works to achieve and uphold the department's mission statement and core values.
  • Maintains a positive attitude toward performing job duties and working with other staff.
  • Exhibits professional decorum at all times while representing UTSA Athletics, including routine events and meetings that occur outside of the office and on the road.
  • Assists in identifying and assessing under-prepared and learning-challenged student-athletes who would benefit from special instruction and learning strategies.
  • Develops and implements programs and services designed to meet the individual needs of academically at-risk student-athletes.
  • Provides daily academic support/mentoring to assigned at-risk student-athletes. Meet one-on-one reviewing and supporting academic progress.
  • Provides individualized instruction using research-based learning strategies and other successful intervention strategies to help students gain the academic skills necessary to earn a degree from UTSA.
  • Develops and provides a variety of teaching activities, including diagnostic needs assessments, skills development, decision-making, time management, etc.
  • Coordinates mentoring programs and tutoring sessions for student-athletes and assists in monitoring supervised study hall programs designed to develop beneficial study skills.
  • Assists with hiring and training learning services staff, graduate assistants, interns, and student workers.
  • Maintains accurate records and submits daily/weekly records about student-athletes' progress toward their goals in the strategic instructional model.
  • Continues active role in professional development, remaining current on learning strategies and other tools successful with academically at-risk student-athletes.
  • Coordinating psycho-educational testing for student-athletes and assisting with the process of registering for and managing the use of academic accommodations with the University Disability Services Office.
  • Participates in Student-Athlete Academic Services and Division of Student Success support team meetings to discuss students' progress and develop strategies for appropriate intervention.
  • Provides individualized support toward academic, social, leadership, and life skills development.
  • Implements developmental, mentoring, and tutoring programs for at-risk student-athletes.
  • Resolves academic issues efficiently and effectively through appropriate consultation, analysis and/or action within the structure of the University.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution in Special Education, Secondary Education, Higher Education, Counseling, or related field.
  • Two (2) years of related experience, including experience teaching learning strategies and developing academic intervention plans to enhance learning for academically underprepared students, students with learning disabilities, and students with ADHD.
  • Experience in developing strong and professional working relationships with student-athletes to encourage the value of education and the development of self-reliance, self-confidence, empowerment, and intrinsic motivation.
  • Experience with high productivity, attention to detail, coordination, and follow-through in high-demand environments.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UTSA and its infrastructure.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree from an accredited institution directly related to Special Education, Secondary Education, Higher Education, Counseling, or a related field, and three or more (3+) years of experience.
  • Experience working with the student-athlete populations at the university level in an academic capacity.
  • Experience in the personal and academic development of students from various backgrounds.
  • Knowledge of NCAA, University, and Athletic department academic policies and procedures.
  • Experience with technological tools to enhance academic performance. Software (Teamworks, Canvas, Civitas/Inspire).

Knowledge Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office and standard office equipment.

Working Conditions

  • Office environment.
  • Ability to travel to and from meetings, training sessions, or other business-related events.
  • Occasional after-hours and weekend work or overtime may be required.

Physical Demands

  • Sedentary work; sitting most of the time. Jobs are sedentary, if walking and standing are required, only occasionally.
  • Ability to exert up to 10 pounds of force to life, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects.

This position will be primarily located on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.
