SUMMARY

JOB DESCRIPTION

This is a skilled craft position responsible for performing routine motor vehicle, grounds, and road maintenance equipment maintenance and repair work. Works under close supervision, with limited latitude for the use of initiative and independent judgment. Reports to the Auto Shop Foreperson.

QUALIFICATIONS

High school diploma or equivalent is required. Vocational training school or equivalent is preferred.

Two years of experience in an automotive shop, service department, or related setting is required. Experience with major overhauls, electrical troubleshooting, and computer controls is required. Experience working on various types of mechanical equipment is preferred. State of Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle inspection certification is required within six months of employment.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Performs routine and preventative maintenance on university vehicles, grounds, and road maintenance equipment.
  2. Diagnoses and repairs university vehicles and equipment including, but not limited to, minor tune-ups; major tune-ups; electrical, heating, and air conditioning systems and components; transmission/transaxle; suspension; steering; brakes; hydraulics; and engine overhauls.
  3. Replaces defective parts.
  4. Lubricates parts, changes oil, and dispenses gasoline to vehicles and equipment.
  5. Operates tow truck, hand and shop tools, scan tools, and other diagnostic equipment as necessary.
  6. Performs routine safety inspections on fleet vehicles.
  7. Performs Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle inspections on fleet vehicles.
  8. Schedules maintenance on vehicles and equipment. Maintains accurate preventative maintenance schedules.
  9. Maintains accurate gasoline and oil usage records and service repair notes.
  10. Completes assigned work orders. Processes invoices for internal billing purposes.
  11. Initiates requests for supplies and parts.
  12. Maintains a clean and safe work environment. Identifies and reports potential hazards.
  13. Stays abreast of developments and emerging trends related to the field of mechanics and electronics.

NON-ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  1. Assists with set-up and break-down for university events.
  2. Performs general asphalt and/or concrete work including, but not limited to, seal coating, crack sealing, and asphalt/concrete paving.
  3. May perform alternative fuel installation, inspection, and repair.
  4. May perform work in varying environmental conditions when vehicle breakdowns occur.
  5. Serves as backup to other departmental staff when assigned.
  6. Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

The individual must possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that the individual can perform the essential functions of the job, with or without reasonable accommodation.

  1. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, university policies and procedures.
  2. Knowledge of, or the ability to learn, welding techniques.
  3. Knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair techniques.
  4. Knowledge of electrical and computerized systems and emission control systems.
  5. Knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade.
  6. Ability to use standard tools and equipment of the profession, including scan tool equipment.
  7. Ability to perform maintenance, to follow detailed instructions, and to interpret drawings and diagrams.
  8. Ability to operate a tow truck.
  9. Ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written form.
  10. Ability to accurately maintain records of materials, supplies, time, and work performed.
  11. Ability to obtain SFA driving certification prior to employment.
  12. Ability to obtain State of Texas Department of Public Safety vehicle inspection certification within six months of employment.
  13. Ability to maintain currency of knowledge and skills, to include adapting to changes in the field.
  14. Physical condition adequate to permit full performance of duties.
