Job Summary/Basic Function
Provide comprehensive proactive academic advising that facilitates student academic success, retention, and timely movement to degree while assisting students with adjustments and decisions about fields of study, curricular and course selections, career opportunities, and academic and administrative procedures, policies and services. Utilize outreach strategies to enhance advisor/student communications, motivation and relationship building. Monitor student academic progress through a variety of technical systems and implement high impact proactive advising techniques and intervention/referral strategies that promote student growth and success.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree by the date of employment and related experience, i.e., collegiate advising, academic counseling, student affairs, etc. Internships and practicums are acceptable as relevant experience. OR Bachelor's degree and a minimum of two years of related experience, i.e., collegiate advising, academic counseling, student affairs, etc. Internships and practicums are acceptable as relevant experience.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with university computer systems or similar computer technologies, i.e., BANNER Admin, uAchieve, Slate-Student Success.
  • Experience working with diverse student populations; experience working collaboratively with large groups.

Essential Functions and percent of time
Academic Advising - 35%

  • Providing students with an overview of Wright State University and the Aviation degree program.
  • Provide proactive academic advising that facilitates student academic success, retention, and timely movement to degree.
  • Advise students individually and in groups about program curricula and degree requirements, academic placement test results, selection of major, major entrance requirements, etc. that facilitate course registration.
  • Clarify academic and administrative policies and procedures; assist students with understanding options and potential academic consequences; guide students through decision-making processes.
  • Apprise students of academic standing and academic requirements. Approve continuing students to register.

Support Aviation Program - 20%

  • Track aviation program requirements such as FAA class 1 Medical Certificate completion and meeting with Aviation Department Leadership.
  • Understand and communicate the financial considerations associated with the aviation program and the deadlines for fees to be paid.
  • Possess knowledge of and be able to communicate the proper sequence for FAA certifications.
  • Coordinate with First Flight on deconfliction between the academic schedule and the flight schedule.
  • Work with Aviation Leadership on required Overrides and Department Approval
  • Possess knowledge of and be able to communicate Veterans Affairs impacts on Aviation Program and student eligibility/requirements.
  • Understand transfer of course credit for aviation certifications and courses.
  • Monitor student grades and communicate issues associated with incomplete and unsatisfactory grades.
  • Understand the impacts of travel times between First Flight and Wright State University.

Monitor Student Success - 20%

  • Monitor student academic progress through a variety of technical systems (including Banner Student Information System, Degree Audit Reports (uAchieve), and Slate-Student Success early alert system and utilize these systems to implement high impact proactive advising techniques and intervention/referral strategies that promote student growth and success.
  • Assess applicability of transfer credit to degree requirements and core coursework; update degree audit data for students including transfer course exceptions.
  • Understand placement test policies.
  • Update and maintain student records; write student letters of recommendation for employers, scholarships, and awards.

Manage Student Issues - 10%

  • Meet with students on academic probation to assist in the development of an academic success plan.
  • Advise and facilitate academic success interventions as well as personal development strategies.
  • Initiate appropriate referrals for students to university academic departments, faculty, student affairs units and campus support services.

Support Student Orientations - 5%

  • Develop and present new student orientation information sessions for students and parents. Consult with students, parents and family members at University New Student Open Houses and recruitment fairs.
  • Assist with orientation for selected student groups including special populations like international students, athletes, College Credit Plus and other special populations or programs as needed

Support Student Success - 5%

  • Stay up to date on curricular changes in all undergraduate programs of study.
  • Participate in professional development by attending training workshops, professional conferences, and educational opportunities with a focus on increasing knowledge and skills in academic success, retention, and high impact advising practices.
  • Serve on Student Success committees; act as unit representative to various university committees; serve as liaison to academic departments, academic affairs units, and/or student affairs departments.

Non-Essential Functions and percent of time
Other duties as assigned. - 5%

Working Conditions
Regular office environment. Some weekend and evening events may be required.
