Job Description Summary / TWC Summary
Under general supervision, provides academic advisement and consultation to students regarding academic planning, progress, and/or problems.
Essential Duties Summary
- Reviews transcripts to ensure eligibility for admission to a specific program and evaluates transfer credits and applicability to program requirements.
- Answers inquiries and resolves problems related to curriculum and course prerequisites for students.
- Advises and assists students with selection of a major field of study, course selection, and class schedule. Monitor students at end of first year regarding standing in chosen program.
- Advises and assists students in the development of academic plans and class schedules to transition to specific undergraduate academic department.
- Monitors student academic progress. Discuss academic and probation problems and advises students of corrective action to improve academic performance. Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic suspension. Completes academic monitoring paperwork for probationary students. Analyzes and processes requests for financial aid appeals.
- Identifies, communicates with, and monitors the academic activities of students and program compliance. Completes academic audit for junior level students in spring of year prior senior year.
- Prepares, maintains and updates files to ensure coursework and other specific program requirements are met by students. Generates required statistical reports to fulfill University and outside agency requirements.
- Assists faculty, athletic coaches, and other counseling personnel by providing records, evaluations, and other requested data or information to process admission or graduation requests and to aid in resolution of academic problems.
- Assists students in overcoming educational and personal problems, and study skills deficiencies. Refers students to counselors, if necessary.
- May assist in formulating procedures and making decisions involving the application of academic suspension regulations, as appropriate.
- Assists in the planning, development, and implementation of orientation programs for students. Assists assigned school/college faculty and staff and participates in activities designed to enhance academic and career success such as career fairs, seminars, special events, etc.
- Performs other job-related duties as required.

Hiring Range
$45,486.69 - $57,995.53
Education
A bachelor’s degree (B.A. or B.S.) from a four-year college or university in the subject area of the advising assignment, or a related field, is required. Relevant subject areas include higher education and counseling. Related fields include biology, chemistry, computer science, engineering, environmental science, industrial technology, mathematics, physics, and transportation studies.
Required Licensing/Certification
Valid Texas Driver’s License preferred.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Must have advanced interpersonal and excellent written and verbal communication skills. Must have excellent interpersonal and problem-solving skills. Must have the ability to use Microsoft Office software such as MS Word and Excel. Must have the ability to use student databases such as Banner, Grades First, Degree Works, or similar.
- May supervise student workers.
- Work requires the direct application of a variety of procedures, policies and/or precedents.
Work Experience
- Experience in instructional development with background in the uses of new technologies for instruction.
- Experience in computer courseware design and instructional technology.
- Ability to maintain the security or integrity of critical infrastructure, which may include communications systems, computer networks and systems, cybersecurity systems, electrical grid, hazardous waste treatment or water treatment system.
Working/Environmental Conditions
- Routine office environment.
- Sitting or standing in one location much of the time.
- Some stooping, lifting or carrying objects lightweight may be required.
