Biochemistry and Genetics Thread Leader - BYU School of Medicine

Job Summary:

The Biochemistry and Genetics Thread Leader at the Brigham Young University (BYU) School of Medicine will serve as a key faculty member in the Department of Preparatory Learning. This individual will be responsible for the leadership, coordination, and delivery of biochemistry and genetics content across the pre-clinical Phase 1 curriculum. The Thread Leader will work closely with the Director of Phase 1, Organ System Course Directors, and fellow thread leaders to ensure that biochemical and genetics principles are fully integrated into all relevant components of Phase 1.

Position Start Date: February 1, 2026

Required Degree:

PhD, or equivalent terminal degree, in biochemistry, genetics, computational genetics, molecular biology, or closely related biomedical field. The required degree must be completed by the start date.

Experience:

  • Demonstrated experience in teaching biochemistry, genetics, or related biomedical science content.
  • Commitment to evidence-based, learner-centered instruction and interdisciplinary collaboration.
  • Ability to work collaboratively within a team of educators to support curricular innovation and integration.
  • Demonstrated experience in research and scholarly activities related to biochemistry, genetics, medical education, or related areas.
  • Alignment with and commitment to the mission, values, and spiritual aims of Brigham Young University and The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
  • Preferred: Experience teaching biochemistry, genetics, or biomedical sciences in medical education.
  • Preferred: Familiarity with USMLE content related to biochemistry and genetics.
  • Preferred: Experience mentoring students in research, scholarly work, or medical education.

Duties/Expectations:

  • Coordinate with course directors to embed biochemistry and genetics learning objectives across all applicable Phase 1 courses.
  • Collaborate with clinical and basic science faculty to ensure vertical and horizontal integration of biochemistry and genetics content.
  • Deliver lectures, small-group instruction, and case-based learning in biochemistry and genetics.
  • Participate in course and thread evaluation and curricular review processes.
  • Serve as a content expert and liaison for biochemistry and genetics-related content in the curriculum.
  • Mentor students in academic and professional development.
  • Participate in the design and evaluation of biochemistry and genetics-related assessments.
  • Contribute to scholarly activities related to medical education, biochemistry, or genetics.
  • May be assigned additional responsibilities within the School of Medicine, including participation in teaching, curriculum review, committee service, and other institutional initiatives.
