Bioinformatics Core Manager

The Institute for Stem Cell Biology and Regenerative Medicine (ISCBRM) seeks a highly motivated Bioinformatics Core Manager (Academic Program Professional 3) to launch and lead a new Bioinformatics Core focused on a training and consultation approach. Under broad direction of faculty and management, the manager will design and deliver regular bootcamps and workshops for bioinformatic training and pipeline implementation, advising investigators and lab teams, and fostering a collaborative, service-oriented culture. The manager will apply advanced technical principles, theories, and concepts to ensure our Institute members are trained in foundational principles of bioinformatics. They will set strategy and long-range plans; implement and administer training and consultation programs; and develop partnerships across the Institute and campus. Program content will span foundational principles of bioinformatics techniques--including as bulk and single-cell sequencing data analysis of multiple modalities, machine learning applications and data visualization--leveraging established pipelines. The manager will continuously evaluate participant feedback and evolving research needs to refine offerings.

The successful candidate will promote the capabilities of the core service to Institute investigators and must demonstrate a service-focused mindset, positive outlook, excellent communication skills, a talent for explaining complex concepts to diverse audiences, and a demonstrated ability to foster collaboration and build strong working relationships with researchers and trainees. They must possess the ability to work independently, and be capable of executing decisions with limited supervision and sometimes limited information.

Duties include*:

  • Lead and oversee development, implementation, administration, and evaluation of bioinformatic training and consultation programs. Oversee analysis, reporting, and program improvements. Oversee the development, adherence to, and implementation of program policies and procedures.
  • Teach or co-teach courses and/or workshops; oversee the administration of courses; create and/or advise in the development of curriculum; and/or advise students, coach and mentor clients and program staff.
  • Lead strategic planning for the program/entity.
  • Represent the entity or program to the broader university, external community, and other stakeholders. Provide expert consultation related to program development, funding opportunities, or other specialty area.
  • Develop outreach strategy related to program communications, development, partnerships and fundraising/funding. Identify external funding opportunities and write proposals and research grants. Develop and oversee strategic financial planning and sustainability for the program/entity, as needed; monitor performance and ensure appropriate controls.
  • Coach and mentor program staff.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Advanced degree (PhD preferred) in bioinformatics, computational biology, or a related field.
  • Strong background in molecular and cellular biology, genomics, and bioinformatics techniques.
  • Teaching and curriculum development desired.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to foster collaboration and build strong working relationships with researchers and trainees.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):
Advanced degree and five or more years of relevant experience in area of specialization or combination of relevant education, training, and/or experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

  • Ability to develop program partnerships and funding sources.
  • Advanced oral, written, and analytical skills, exhibiting fluency in area of specialization.
  • Ability to oversee and direct staff.
  • Ability to manage budgets and develop financial plans.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

  • Frequently stand/walk, sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Occasionally use a telephone, writing by hand, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weight up to 40 pounds.
  • Rarely sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weight > 40 pounds.
  • Ability to use voice to present information/communication with others.
  • On-campus mobility.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May work extended hours, evenings or weekends.
  • May travel locally.
  • Occasional overnight travel.

The expected pay range for this position is $139,741 to $179,496 per annum.
