Shift work to operate and maintain the high pressure central boilers. Performs preventive and corrective maintenance on the boilers and their auxiliary equipment. The supervisor is the Lead Shift Engineer.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Operates the central boilers during an assigned shift. This includes igniting the burners on either fuel source (natural gas or #2 fuel oil,) inspecting and maintain the chemical and feedwater systems, monitoring the controls, and taking and recording readings from gauges and meters. Responsible for meeting the steam demand for various loads and conditions.
Reads and records in a permanent log selected temperatures, pressures, flow rates, chemical concentrations, plume discharge and other parameters during the course of the work shift.
Performs repairs and preventive maintenance on the boilers and their auxiliary equipment to include; pumps, aerators, expansion tank, valves, gauges, etc.
Monitor the energy management systems (currently CSI & ALC) and be able to manipulate settings to perform temporary corrective actions until the HVAC Shop can investigate the problem and perform permanent repairs or corrections. Maintains a log to record all actions performed within the energy management system.
Performs all work with adherence to safety procedures. Inspects completed work and ensures that work conforms with requirements of local building and safety codes.
Works off ladders and scaffolding occasionally.
Must be able to lift at least 50 pounds of supplies, material, and equipment.
Communicates effectively (both orally and in writing) with other tradesmen, vendors, and with students and occupants of buildings. Receives trouble and emergency calls from students and occupants after normal work hours and then investigates these calls as long as the boilers and all ancillary equipment are functioning correctly. The goal is to fix the problem without having to call in a tradesman, but the boiler operation cannot be jeopardized. Calls in a tradesman if the problem cannot be solved by himself.
Keeps supervisor informed of all major problems that occurred during the work shift by entering the events in a clear and legible manner in a permanent log book.
Receives supplies and deliveries for the department after normal work hours.
Sweeps, vacuums, and cleans up office area and work floor after completion of shift.
Maintains tools and test equipment so they are clean, operable, and properly stored.
Performs other routine tasks as directed by the supervisor.
Required Qualifications:
Has knowledge of high pressure boilers and possess a blue seal for steam.
Has a minimum of three years experience with high pressure boilers.
Familiar with basic energy management principles and operation
Mechanical aptitude.
Must possess or obtain "C" operator license for underground storage tanks. (within 12 months)
Desired Qualifications:
Troubleshoot boilers and auxiliary equipment
NJ Journeyman electrical license
Licenses and Certificates:
Blue seal license for steam
Valid driver's license
Salary Range:
$41.82 per hour
