Job Summary

The Building Automation Systems Specialist (BASSpec) supports the commissioning, retro-commissioning, and continuous commissioning of campus buildings and energy systems. This position plays a key role in ensuring optimal performance and energy efficiency across a wide range of facilities and infrastructure. This role is critical to the operation, maintenance, programming, and ongoing optimization of our Building Automation Systems (BAS), supporting air-handling units, VAV boxes, lighting controls, and two central thermal plants. The BASSpec is responsible for mentoring and training junior control technicians and BAS Operators, and contributing to energy-saving initiatives through programming and system upgrades.

Core Responsibilities

  1. Leads and assists in the commissioning, retro-commissioning, and continuous commissioning of new and existing building systems.
  2. Sets up and analyzes BAS trends and performance data to identify inefficiencies and implement corrective actions.
  3. Maintains, troubleshoots, and optimizes control systems for thermal plants, air-handling units, variable air volume systems, and building lighting control systems.
  4. Performs routine inspections, calibrations, and preventive maintenance on control system components.
  5. Responds to BAS alarms and system malfunctions in a timely and effective manner.
  6. Assists with air-balance/verification of laboratories, animal areas, classrooms, and offices.
  7. Programs, configures, and troubleshoots control logic within Johnson Controls (JCI) Metasys and Siemens Desigo platforms.
  8. Integrates new systems and devices into the BAS as part of upgrades or construction projects.
  9. Maintains accurate BAS documentation, including system architecture, sequence of operations, and point maps.
  10. Collaborates with the Energy Management team to identify and implement energy conservation measures (ECMs).
  11. Develops control strategies and programming changes to support energy efficiency initiatives and sustainability goals.
  12. Participates in utility metering, submetering, and monitoring systems maintenance and data quality checks.
  13. Maintains updated documentation for all BAS systems, including schematics, as-builts, software backups, and control sequences.
  14. Generates reports on BAS performance, energy use, and key system metrics as needed.
  15. Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • High School Diploma, Vocational Training, or Apprenticeship in a related field.
  • Five (5) years of related work experience.
  • This position requires the ability to maintain the security and integrity of UT San Antonio and its infrastructure.

Working Conditions

Academic, laboratory, research, clinical facilities, and field conditions in or adjacent to radiological, biological, chemical, and other hazardous material work areas. Work involves various degrees of hazard and may include prolonged work in outdoor conditions. Exposure to high voltage and biohazard areas. Use of specialized personal protective equipment and work in hazardous areas mandates participation in the UTSA Occupational Health Program. Emergency repair call-ins during non-normal working hours.

Physical Demands

Medium work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.

This position will work primarily on campus. Travel and parking expenses are the employee's responsibility.

This position is contingent upon a successful background check. Verification of a valid driver's license and Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) may be completed as applicable. Applicants selected must be able to show proof of eligibility to work in the United States by time of hire.
