Position Highlights

The Building Safety & Asset Protection Coordinator (Loss Prevention Specialist II) ensures the implementation and adherence to safety protocols across facilities, minimizing risks and promoting a safe and secure environment for staff, students, and visitors. The incumbent will also work with store leadership to promote workplace safety, investigate incidents, monitor security systems, and develop strategies to reduce theft, shrinkage, and loss across Campus Store operations. In addition, this role coordinates building maintenance needs and oversees fleet vehicle safety and upkeep to ensure facilities and equipment remain in optimal working condition.

Duties & Responsibilities

Identifies, develops and implements loss prevention & safety standards:

  • Researches, recommends and implements systems to minimize loss of merchandise, money, product or other department assets.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures to prevent theft at point of sale and inventory storage areas.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, risk assessments and inspections across the unit to identify potential hazards or compliance concerns.
  • Develop and deliver trainings programs on workplace safety, emergency procedures and theft prevention.
  • Trains, schedules and approves payroll for student loss prevention team.
  • Work on a rotating schedule, including leading opening, closing and weekend shifts as scheduled.

Oversees departmental surveillance systems:

  • Partners with IT department to ensure the implementation and use of effective surveillance systems and security equipment.
  • Conducts periodic inspections of stores and inventory facilities and testing of surveillance systems (video, alarm, etc.) to ensure equipment is functioning properly.
  • Coordinate building hours, locking/unlocking, alarm/card access and departmental building keys.
  • Primary point of contact for building emergency-related issues and alarm notifications.

Monitoring inventory and reporting:

  • Audits and investigates sources of known losses, including customer and employee activities.
  • Monitor and analyze trends in theft, inventory loss, or damage, and implement targeted loss prevention strategies.
  • Collaborate with law enforcement and campus safety departments as needed to report and follow up on security incidents.
  • Prepares reports on effectiveness of established prevention measures.

Building Maintenance Support:

  • Inputs maintenance work orders and coordinates with facilities management or on-site staff to ensure completion of projects.
  • Coordinates maintenance schedules of all store facilities including ensuring vendors have appropriate building accesses and staff is kept aware of closures and work being done.
  • Ensures fleet vehicles are maintained and in safe working order.
  • Ensures facilities are maintained and are safe and secure facilities for employees, students and community members.
  • Assists store managers with merchandising, signage and product displays.
  • Additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations, fire and life safety codes, and other relevant federal, state, and university safety standards.
  • Knowledge of loss prevention principles, asset protection strategies, and behavioral indicators of theft or fraud.
  • Knowledge of video surveillance systems, access control technologies, and incident response protocols.
  • Ability to work independently and exercise sound judgment in sensitive and high pressure situations.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain confidentiality in all safety and loss-related matters.
  • Ability to assess risk across varied operational environments and recommend proactive solutions.
  • Ability to work nights, weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to work independently, manage multiple priorities, and make sound decisions in fast-paced or emergency situations.

Physical requirements:

  • Occasionally lifts/transports/moves a maximum of 50lbs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent advanced learning attained through professional development.
  • Minimum of 3 years of relevant work experience, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Must have valid driver's license at time of employment and ability to drive according to the University Fleet Safety Policy.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite (especially Excel, Word, and Outlook) for tracking, reporting, and analyzing safety and loss prevention data.
  • Experience using mobile devices and applications to respond to security, maintenance, or operational requests while in the field.
  • Familiarity with electronic surveillance systems, access control software, and alarm monitoring platforms.
  • Experience in facility management or coordination of maintenance and fleet operations.
  • Demonstrated ability to conduct data analysis and prepare detailed incident, audit, and compliance reports.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with staff, students, vendors, and law enforcement or campus safety personnel.
  • Training or certification in occupational safety, security operations, or loss prevention.
  • Experience working in a higher education, retail, or multi-site operational environment.
