Chemical and Hazardous Materials Technician
Job Summary
Supports the day-to-day operations of chemicals and hazardous waste management programs. Responsibilities include maintaining chemical inventory, conducting facility and equipment inspections, collecting waste materials, and coordinating proper disposal to ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, best practices, and University policies.
Responsibilities
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Assists in collection and disposal of chemicals, biological and universal waste materials
- Prepares materials for waste shipments, including documentation and labeling
- Inspects and assesses waste accumulation areas for compliance
- Assists in coordinating hazardous wastes pick-up and disposal by the approved vendors.
- Maintains chemical and hazardous material inventories across the campus
- Assists in providing training end users on proper handling of waste and chemicals
- Assist sin response to hazardous materials incidents such as spills or leaks
- Conducts inspections of emergency eye wash and safety showers
- Assists in maintaining Material Safety Datasheets
- Assists in general health and safety tasks, as part of EHS team
Required Qualifications
Educational Requirements
Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution of higher education or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience.
Other Required Qualifications
Current, valid, and unrestricted driver's license
Required Experience
Three (3) years of relevant experience.
Preferred Qualifications
Additional Preferred Qualifications
Resource Conservation and Recovery Act training (RCRA)
Hazardous materials transportation training (DOT)
Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training (HAZWOPER)
Preferred Educational Qualifications
An advanced degree from an accredited institution of higher education in a related field
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
ABILITIES
Able to wear appropriate protective equipment including respirator
Able to manage multiple tasks or projects simultaneously and meet deadlines.
KNOWLEDGE
Knowledge of universal and hazardous waste rules and regulations
SKILLS
Excellent interpersonal, initiative, teamwork, problem solving, independent judgment, organization, communication (verbal and written), time management, project management and presentation skills
Proficient with computer applications and programs associated with the position (i.e., Microsoft Office suite)
Strong attention to detail and follow up skills
Demonstrated customer service skills and professional phone/email etiquette

This is not a supervisory position.
This position does not have any financial responsibilities.
This position will be required to drive.
This role is considered a position of trust.
This position does not require a purchasing card (P-Card).
This position may travel 1% - 24% of the time
This position does not require security clearance.
