Position Summary

San Diego State University is seeking a solutions-focused and technically skilled Business Systems Analyst II to evaluate business processes, translate requirements into system solutions, and support implementation and testing efforts. This role plays a critical part in driving operational improvements, data accuracy, and system efficiency across university departments.

Key Responsibilities

  • Systems Analysis & Project Coordination
    • Analyze business systems to identify gaps and recommend improvements; translate business and technical needs into functional specifications.
    • Lead moderately complex system analysis projects, define strategy and resources, and document functional requirements and workflows.
    • Design and implement workflow improvements, data validation processes, and quality control measures to ensure system accuracy and efficiency.
    • Conduct user acceptance testing, support training, and develop documentation including user manuals, updated procedures, and business requirements.
    • Create dashboards, reports, and visualizations to communicate findings and support decision-making across departments.
  • Training, Support & Other Duties
    • Provide training and technical guidance to colleagues and end-users.
    • Support team members through mentorship, knowledge sharing, and project backup roles.
    • Contribute to documentation, policy interpretation, and cross-functional collaboration.

Position Information

  • This is a full-time (1.0 time-base), benefits eligible, temporary position with an anticipated end date 18 months after start date, with the possibility of reappointment.
  • This position is designated as exempt under FLSA and is not eligible for overtime compensation.
  • Standard SDSU work hours are Monday - Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.
  • This position is eligible for telecommuting up to 2 days per week, following a training period during which on-site presence is required.

Education and Experience

Equivalent to a bachelor's degree in a related field and two years of relevant experience. Additional experience which demonstrates acquired and successfully applied knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis. An advanced degree in a related field may be substituted for the required experience on a year-for-year basis.

Key Qualifications

  • Working knowledge of business systems analysis principles and practices, with the ability to diagnose problems, identify system issues, and implement effective solutions.
  • Functional and technical experience with PeopleSoft and other campus enterprise systems.
  • Strong project planning and organizational skills to plan, organize, and manage multiple processes and projects.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills to understand needs and priorities and to foster strong relationships and effective communication to ensure alignment and project success.
  • Ability to work with and analyze complex data sets and create complex reports using database, query language, and analytical tools.
  • Strong analytical skills in order to evaluate user and business needs as well as accurately interpret data to develop sound conclusions and recommendations.
  • Proficiency in using applicable software applications and business systems.
  • Knowledge of University and IT policies, processes, and procedures, as well as data privacy regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team and build relationships with diverse stakeholders.
  • Ability to provide lead work direction and training to others.

Compensation and Benefits

Compensation:
Step placement will be determined based on relevant qualifications and professional experience, in alignment with the department's budget and equity guidelines.

  • Initial step placement is not expected to exceed Step 1 ($6,492) for highly qualified candidates.
  • CSU Classification Salary Range: $6,492 - $9,458 per month (Step 1 - Step 20).
  • Future increases, including step advancements, are subject to contract negotiations.
