CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) RESEARCH GRANT, UNDER THE “SymbIO4WWTP - Modelo Multi-Simbiótico Interoperável para uma Estação de Tratamento de Águas Residuais sustentável e optimizada por IA” project (COMPETE2030-FEDER-00797700), ONGOING AT THE SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS AND MANAGEMENT OF THE UNIVERSITY OF PORTO
The School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto hereby opens this call for 1 (one) Research Grant (BI), for a student enrolled in a master degree to carry out R&D activities under the project “SymbIO4WWTP - Modelo Multi-Simbiótico Interoperável para uma Estação de Tratamento de Águas Residuais Sustentável e Optimizada por IA”, reference (Ref. COMPETE2030-FEDER-00797700), co-funded by the Foundation for Science and Technology, I.P. (FCT, I.P.), COMPETE 2030, Portugal 2030 and the European Union, currently underway at the Economics Department, under the following conditions:

To apply for the research grant, applicants must comply with the following requirements, for which documentary evidence must be provided:
- Bachelor degree in Economics or relevant related areas;
- Be a student enrolled on a Master’s degree in Environmental Economics - a requirement to be duly verified at the time of hiring.
3. Preferred requirements
- Knowledge of the biological processes involved in a Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP);
- Knowledge of environmental, economic and social assessment;
- Proactivity;
- Ability to work in a team.
4. Work plan
4.1. The main tasks to be carried out as part of the scholarship will be:
- Realising and maximising the potential for symbiosis between the wastewater treatment plant and its surrounding environment;
- Assessment of sustainable and circular business models;
- Economic, environmental and social assessment and validation.
4.2. When the academic degree or diploma is awarded during the term of the studentship contracts, the studentship may continue as long as the activities provided for in the work plan have not been completed and under the terms specifically provided for in the call for applications and in the contract, in accordance with Article 10(6) of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation.
5. Applicable Legislation and Regulations
The call for applications and the respective award of the studentship are governed by the provisions of the University of Porto's Research Studentship Regulation - approved by Regulation no. 582/2026, published in Diário da República, 2nd Serie, n. 96, May 19th, hereinafter referred to as the Regulations no. 43, of 03rd March; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law no. 4/2015, of 7th January; the Research Fellow Statute (EBI), approved by Law no. 40/2004, of 18th August, in the current wording published by Decree-Law no. 123/2019, of 28th August and; other applicable rules.
6. Workplace
The work plan will be carried out at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto and at other locations necessary for its implementation, under the academic supervision of Professor Susana Maria Almeida da Silva Pinto, PhD, Associate Professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto.
7. Duration
The research fellowship will last for six months on a full-time basis and may be renewed for a further six months, subject to a positive assessment; under no circumstances may it exceed the limits set out in Regulation No. 582/2026 for the type of fellowship in question.
8. Monthly maintenance allowance amount
8.1. The monthly maintenance allowance for the studentship is 1.090,98€, according to Annex I of the Regulation.
8.2. Payment will be made by Faculty of Economy of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this allowance, the studentship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The studentship holder can join the Voluntary Social Insurance Scheme (valid for a studentship contract of six months or more), which is optional and the reimbursement corresponds to the 1st step of the contribution base.
9. Selection methods
9.1. The selection methods are as follows: CV assessment (CA), weighted at 70 per cent, and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (INT), weighted at 30 per cent, which will only take place if the Selection Panel considers that the CV assessment does not adequately clarify the candidates’ actual skills or enable it to determine which candidate is best suited to the post and the duties to be performed. If an interview is to be held, it will be conducted with the two (2) candidates with the highest scores in the CV assessment.
9.2. Each member of the Selection Panel assesses the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The criteria and weightings for the CV assessment (CA) are as follows:
- Undergraduate degree average (0 to 5 points): average of 10–12: 1 point; average of 13–14: 2 points; average of 15–16: 3 points; average of 17–18: 4 points; average of 19–20: 5 points;
- Master’s degree average to date (0 to 5 points): average of 10–12: 1 point; average of 13–14: 2 points; average of 15–16: 3 points; average of 17–18: 4 points; average of 19–20: 5 points;
- How well the candidate’s profile matches the work to be carried out (0 to 10 points).
9.4. Candidates who have received a score of 10 points or less will be excluded at the preliminary selection stage.
9.5. The following are the criteria and weightings for the interview (ENT), should one take place:
- Knowledge and profile appropriate to the duties to be performed (0 to 10 points);
- Ability to answer the questions asked (0 to 10 points).
9.6. Candidates may request authorisation from the Chair of the Selection Panel to have their interview conducted via videoconference, stating the reasons for doing so.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is deemed to constitute withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.8. The Final Mark (FM) will be calculated using the following formula: FM = (0.7 × AC) + (0.3 × ENT).
9.9. Candidates who have received a Final Mark of 10 points or less will be excluded from the competition.
9.10. This competition is intended solely to fill the vacancy specified; should no candidate demonstrate that they possess the profile required to carry out the work plan described above within the scope of this project, the Selection Panel reserves the right not to award the post under competition.

1st alternate member: Dr Ricardo Oliveira Braga Moreira Biscaia, Associate Professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto;
2nd alternate member: Dr Manuel Emilio Mota de Almeida Delgado Castelo Branco, Full Professor at the School of Economics and Management of the University of Porto.
11. Submission of applications
11.1. Applications must be submitted by 31 August 2026 (local time – Lisbon).

11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set out in this Call for Applications, namely:
- Curriculum vitae;
- Bachelor’s degree certificate;
- Master’s degree certificate, or a certificate enabling the calculation of the Master’s degree average to date, if applicable;
- Copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if it was obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of appointment);
- Proof of enrolment on a study programme or a sworn statement certifying that you meet the enrolment requirements and that you will submit proof of enrolment by the time of appointment;
- Declaration of eligibility (attached).
11.4. The candidates may also attach any other documents they feel are relevant to assessing their merit.
11.5. Failure to comply with the application submission deadline, failure to submit or late submission of the documents referred to in points a), to g) of paragraph 11.3. will result in the application being excluded.
11.6. The documents mentioned in point 11.3 must preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.7. The Jury may, whenever it deems it necessary, ask applicants to submit additional documents relating to the facts mentioned in their CVs, setting a deadline for this, as follows:
- the documentation referred to is not intended for the presentation of elements not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the addition of missing documents required by this Notice;
- all tenderers are informed that additional documentation has been requested.
12. False declarations
False statements made by candidates will be penalized in accordance with the law.
13. Notification of results
13.1. Notifications shall be made by publication on the Apply UP electronic platform, in accordance with Article 112(1)(c) of the CPA, and shall take effect in accordance with Article 113 of the CPA.
13.2. Pursuant to Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to submit their comments in writing.
14. Booking list
A reserve list shall be prepared based on the final ranking list and may be used in the event of the withdrawal of the candidate ranked first. The highest authority of the Faculty reserves the right to call the next candidate in order, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. The reserve list may be used for a maximum period of six (6) months from the date of approval of the final ranking list.
