CALL FOR APPLICATIONS FOR 1 (ONE) RESEARCH FELLOWSHIP (BI), AS PART OF THE “FODMAPS – FOOD OPTIMISATION FOR DIET MANAGEMENT AND ADVANCED PRODUCT SOLUTIONS” PROJECT (OPERATION No. 15338, OPERATION CODE AT THE COMPETE2030-FEDER-00901300 FUND DESK), FUNDED BY THE EUROPEAN REGIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND (ERDF) THROUGH THE INNOVATION AND DIGITAL TRANSITION PROGRAMME (COMPETE 2030) AND BY NATIONAL FUNDS (FCT) UNDER CALL No. MPR-2023-12. BOLS-FFUP-26-19
This call for applications is now open for the award of 1 (one) Research Grant (BI) to a student enrolled on a master’s programme, or to a graduate enrolled on a non-degree course, to carry out R&D activities within the scope of the project “FODMAPS – Optimisation of Foods for Diet Management and Advanced Product Solutions’ (Operation No. 15338, Operation Code at the Compete2030 Funds Desk: 2030-Feder-00901300), funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) through the Innovation and Digital Transition Programme (COMPETE 2030) and by National Funds (FCT) under Call No. MPr-2023-12, currently underway at the Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, under the following conditions:

2. Admission requirements
All individuals of legal age who meet the following requirements, as evidenced by supporting documentation, may apply for this scholarship:
- A bachelor’s degree in Pharmaceutical Sciences, Biochemistry, Chemistry or related scientific fields 1;
- Be a student enrolled on a Master’s programme in the field of Chemical Sciences and related areas, or on a non-degree course forming part of the educational programme of a higher education institution, carried out in association or cooperation with one or more R&D units – a requirement to be duly verified at the time of appointment2
1 Where an academic qualification has been awarded by a foreign higher education institution, it must be recognised by a Portuguese higher education institution, in accordance with the provisions of Article 25 of Decree-Law No. 66/2018 of 16 August, which approves the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education diplomas awarded by foreign higher education institutions, and Article 4(2)(e) of Decree-Law No. 60/2018 of 3 August; any formalities laid down therein must be completed by the date of the contract.
2 Proof of enrolment must be submitted by the date of the contract signing, and applicants may attach a sworn statement certifying that they meet the enrolment conditions for the purposes of their application.
3. Preferred criteria
- Good academic performance in the fields of Chemical Sciences, Food Science and Technology, Quality Control or related scientific fields;
- Proven experience in the preparation of food samples and analysis using enzymatic, spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods, including analytical quality control procedures;
- Proven experience of participating in research projects in the field of food chemistry, quality control or food analysis;
- Proven experience in literature reviews, the organisation and processing of experimental data, the preparation of technical and scientific documentation, and the dissemination of results;
- Immediate availability to commence the work plan, to be indicated in the cover letter.
4. Work plan
4.1. The main tasks to be carried out as part of the fellowship will be:
- Assisting with the review of the scientific literature, the selection and characterisation of the foods under study, and the organisation and updating of the project’s databases;
- Preparation, processing, preservation and extraction of plant-based food samples, including the application of domestic processing strategies;
- Quantitative determination of FODMAPs in food samples, namely by HPLC-RI and by enzymatic and/or spectrophotometric methods;
- Processing, critical analysis and interpretation of experimental data, integration of the results within the scope of the project, and collaboration in the preparation of technical and scientific documentation and in activities relating to the communication and dissemination of the results.
4.2. Where an academic degree or diploma is awarded whilst the fellowship contract is in force, the fellowship may continue provided that the activities set out in the work plan have not been completed and in accordance with the specific terms set out in the call for applications and in the contract, pursuant to Article 10(6) of the Regulation.
5. Applicable legislation and regulations
The competition and the award of the scholarship are governed by the provisions set out in the University of Porto’s Research Scholarship Regulations – approved by Regulation No. 582/2026, published in the Diário da República, 2nd Series, No. 96, of 19 May; the legal framework for the recognition of academic degrees and higher education qualifications awarded by foreign higher education institutions; the Code of Administrative Procedure (CPA), approved by Decree-Law No. 4/2015 of 7 January; and Statute of the Research Fellow (EBI), approved by Law No. 40/2004 of 18 August, in its current version published by Decree-Law No. 123/2019 of 28 August; Regulation on Research Grants No. 950/2019 of 16 December 2019, issued by the Foundation for Science and Technology (FCT), I.P., in its current version, and other applicable regulations.
6. Place of work
The research project will be carried out at the Laboratory of Bromatology and Hydrology, Department of Chemical Sciences, Faculty of Pharmacy, University of Porto, and/or other locations necessary for its execution, under the scientific supervision of Professor Susana Casal and Dr Rebeca Cruz.
7. Duration of the scholarship
The BI scholarship shall have a duration of 12 months, on a full-time basis, and may be renewable, subject to a positive assessment, up to the end of the work plan or the funding period; under no circumstances may its duration exceed one year, where the scholarship has been awarded to graduates enrolled on non-degree courses, or two years where the scholarship has been awarded to a student enrolled on a Master’s degree programme in accordance with Article 10(3) of the Regulations.
8. Amount of the monthly maintenance grant
8.1. The amount of the monthly maintenance grant is €1,090.98, as set out in Annex I to the Regulations.
8.2. Payment will be made by the Faculty of Pharmacy of the University of Porto by bank transfer. In addition to this grant, the scholarship holder will be covered by personal accident insurance.
8.3. The scholarship holder may join the Voluntary Social Security scheme (applicable to scholarship contracts of six months or more); this is optional (not compulsory) and the reimbursement corresponds to the first bracket of the contribution base.
9. Selection methods
9.1. The selection methods are as follows: CV assessment (CA), weighted at 70 per cent, and, optionally, supplemented by an interview (INT), weighted at 30 per cent, which will only take place if the Selection Panel considers that the CV assessment does not adequately clarify the candidates’ actual skills or enable it to determine which candidate is best suited to the post and the duties to be performed. If an interview is to be held, it will be conducted with the 3 (three) candidates with the highest scores in the CV assessment.
9.2. Each member of the Selection Panel assesses the selection methods on a scale of 0 to 20 points.
9.3. The criteria and weightings for the CV assessment (AC) are as follows:
- Academic merit and the relevance of the candidate’s academic background to the scientific areas and activities set out in the work plan (0 to 3 points);
- Experience in the preparation of food samples and analysis using enzymatic, spectrophotometric and chromatographic methods, including analytical quality control procedures (0 to 9 points);
- Experience of participating in research projects in the field of food chemistry, quality control or food analysis (0 to 4 points);
- Experience in literature review, organisation and processing of experimental data, preparation of technical and scientific documentation, and dissemination of results (0 to 4 points).
9.4. Candidates who have received a score of 14 points or less will be excluded at the preliminary selection stage.
9.5. The following are the criteria and weightings for the interview (ENT), should one be held:
- Mastery of the technical and scientific knowledge relevant to the implementation of the work plan (0 to 7 marks);
- Ability to analyse, solve problems and critically discuss practical situations relating to the preparation and analysis of food samples and analytical quality control (0 to 6 marks);
- Motivation, suitability of the candidate’s profile for the project’s activities and willingness to commence and carry out the work plan (0 to 4 marks);
- Communication skills, organisational skills, autonomy and ability to integrate into a research team (0 to 3 points).
9.6. Applicants may request authorisation from the Chair of the Selection Panel for their interview to be conducted via videoconference, stating the reasons for doing so.
9.7. Failure to attend the interview stage of the selection process is deemed to constitute withdrawal from the competition, and candidates will be excluded from the competition.
9.8. The Final Mark (FM) will be calculated using the following formula: FM = (0.7 AC) + (0.3 ENT).
9.9. Candidates who have achieved a Final Mark of 14 points or less will be excluded from the competition.
9.10. 11. Submission procedure and deadline
11.1. Applications must be submitted by 2 september 2026 (23:59 – Lisbon).

11.3. The application must be accompanied by documents proving compliance with the conditions set out in this Notice, namely:
- Curriculum vitae;
- A letter of motivation, stating availability to commence the work plan;
- A copy of the certificate(s) for the required qualifications and recognition of the degree if obtained from a foreign higher education institution (this recognition may be submitted by the time of appointment);
- Proof of enrolment on a study programme or course not leading to an academic degree (enrolment to be confirmed by the time of appointment);
- Declaration of eligibility (attached);
- Evidence of experience relating to points (b) to (d) of section 9.3.
11.4. Applicants may also submit any other documents they consider relevant to the assessment of their merits.
11.5. Failure to meet the deadline for submitting the application, or the failure to submit, or the late submission of, the documents referred to in subparagraphs (a) to (e) of paragraph 11.3 shall result in the exclusion of the application.
11.6. For the purposes of assessing applications, no documents accessible via links will be considered, with the exception of those referring to publications with a DOI.
11.7. The documents mentioned in point 11.3 should preferably be submitted in a non-editable format.
11.8. The Selection Panel may, whenever it deems necessary, request candidates to submit supplementary documents relating to the information set out in the curriculum vitae submitted, setting a deadline for this purpose, as follows:
- the documentation referred to is not intended for the submission of information not mentioned in the curriculum vitae, nor for the provision of missing documents required under this Notice;
- all candidates shall be informed that supplementary documentation has been requested.
12. False statements
Any false statements made by candidates will be punished in accordance with the law.
13. Method of publication/notification of results
13.1. Candidates will be notified of the minutes relating to the application assessment stage(s) by email, sent to the address they have provided for this purpose, with a delivery confirmation.
13.2. Notifications shall be made by email, in accordance with Article 112(1)(c) and Article 113(5) of the CPA.
13.3. In accordance with the provisions of Article 121 et seq. of the CPA, once notified, candidates have 10 working days to respond in writing
14. Reserve list
A reserve list shall be drawn up based on the final ranking list, which may be used in the event that the candidate ranked first withdraws. The faculty’s highest authority reserves the right to call upon the next candidate, and so on, until the vacancy is filled. This reserve list may be used for a maximum period of 12 (twelve) months from the date of publication of this Notice.
