Campus Police Officer I (Multiple Vacancies)
Overview
Provides customer service while supporting the campus community, including students, staff, and faculty. Primary responsibilities include patrolling the campus on foot or by vehicle, securing and inspecting buildings, grounds, and surrounding areas, investigating incidents and crimes, and enforcing state laws along with institutional rules and regulations. Collaborates closely with the local community partners and local law enforcement. This position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA) under the Jeanne Clery Act and a Responsible Employee under Title IX.
Shift, Days Off and Meal Break: TBD by shift bidding process; subject to change according to departmental needs. Must be available for off-shift overtime, including compulsory callbacks.
Required Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED equivalent
- Valid Driver’s License
- Must pass background investigation, medical examination, and psychological screening
- Must meet Municipal Training Committee fitness standard
- Successful completion of MPTC approved academy that meets the requirements to be certified under POST-C
- Ability to obtain certification issued by the Massachusetts Peace Officer Standards and Training Commission (POST-C), meeting the statutory requirements set forth in Chapter 253 of the Acts of 2020 chapter 6E authorizing employment to work as police officer in the Commonwealth
Preferred Qualifications
- Applicants who are academy trained and POST certified preferred
- Must have the ability to maintain composure and perform under stressful conditions and to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing
Working Location
This is an onsite position in Salem, MA with on-campus, in-person responsibilities, which may require evening and weekend hours.
Campus Police Officers work under exposure to injury resulting from dangerous weapons, physical and verbal abuse and adverse weather conditions; may carry firearms; may operate motor vehicles at high speed for pursuit or emergency response purposes; work with people under physical and/or emotional stress; work alone in isolated or high-crime areas; walk and stand for prolonged periods of time; lift and carry heavy objects or people; may travel for job related purposes; and may be required to furnish private transportation for job-related travel for which mileage is reimbursed.
