Job Description

Special Requirements:

  • Must pass or be a graduate of the Rhode Island Municipal Police Training Academy or another accredited academy, and this Department's Campus Police Officer training program, including receiving instruction on Use of Force policy.
  • Must be eligible for licensing as a Special Police Officer by the Superintendent of the Rhode Island State Police.
  • Those candidates who are required to attend the RI Municipal Police Training Academy must pass all recruitment training courses, including Emergency Water Safety.
  • Pass psychological and physical exam.
  • Be 21 years of age or older
  • Possess a valid driver's license and the ability to operate a motor vehicle
  • Must be a US citizen
  • Have high school diploma or GED, higher education a plus
  • Must have no felony convictions
  • Ability to provide high level of customer service
  • Ability to treat others with dignity and respect regardless of the situation
  • Officers will work on a rotation schedule, four days on and two days off

A. Nature of Work:

The Campus Police Officer shall be responsible for the safety and security of all University properties; the faculty, staff, student body; and guests and visitors during the assigned tour of duty. The Campus Police Officer will patrol the University buildings, grounds and adjacent public areas to enforce the statutes of the State of Rhode Island, and the rules and regulations of Brown University. Responsibilities include prevention and suppression of crime, protection of life and property, apprehension and protection of offenders, preservation of the peace and maintenance of order, enforcement of all state statutes and University regulations, and assisting with community relations.

The Campus Police Officer is licensed by the Superintendent of State Police under Title 12, Chapter 2.1, of the General Laws of Rhode Island, with concurrent jurisdiction with State Police and Providence Police Departments. Officers must maintain proficiency in police equipment including firearms.

B. Illustrative Examples of Work:

Patrol buildings and grounds, conduct criminal investigations, prepare reports, make arrests, testify in court, respond to emergencies, assist in training, maintain equipment, and perform other duties to protect the University community.

C. Qualifications:

Detailed physical, operational, and communicative abilities required, including effecting arrests, operating equipment, investigations, judgment in use of force, driving in emergencies, pursuits, radio communication, patrols, rescues, prisoner handling, searches, surveillance, public interaction, legal document handling, evidence identification, background check, psychological and physical exams. Must be 21+, US citizen, high school educated (higher preferred), strong communication skills, complete probationary period, licensed as Special Police Officer.

Timeline:

Lateral candidates (academy graduates): Ongoing application review, possible interviews.
Entry level candidates: Ongoing review, physical/written assessments via Fit2Serve. Email certifications to dps_hiring@brown.edu. Possible interviews within two weeks.
