Canada Excellence Research Chair in Ocean Ecological Modelling
Canada Excellence Research Chair in Ocean Ecological Modelling
Associate Professor or Professor (Tenure)
Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences | Institute for the Ocean and Fisheries
The Department of Earth, Ocean and Atmospheric Sciences (EOAS) and the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries (IOF) at The University of British Columbia (UBC) Vancouver campus are recruiting for an outstanding researcher to be nominated for a Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) in Ocean Ecological Modelling, at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor, with tenure. The CERC program is designed to attract and support world-renowned researchers and their teams to Canada. The selected candidate will be nominated for a CERC, with the nomination subject to review and final approval by the CERC Secretariat. This CERC award, if successful, will be for $1M per year for eight years.
The CERC in Ocean Ecological Modelling focuses on how ocean biogeochemical cycles, ecosystems, and living marine resources respond to environmental change, informing sustainable ocean management and food security. Key areas include impacts of ocean deoxygenation, acidification, and warming on marine ecosystems, and adaptive policy responses. The candidate should develop innovative ocean modelling and data assimilation approaches, bridging numerical analysis with ocean observations.
The successful candidate will have a joint appointment in EOAS and IOF, with collaboration opportunities in UBC groups like the Biodiversity Research Centre, Data Science Institute, Institute for Resources, Environment and Sustainability, and School of Public Policy and Global Affairs.
UBC offers world-class infrastructure, including the Earth Sciences Building, Aquatic Ecosystems Research Laboratory, and computational resources.
Responsibilities include leading a funded research program, supervising students, teaching, and participating in university service. Candidates must hold a PhD, have 10 years of experience in ocean ecological modelling, demonstrate excellence in research and teaching, and commit to equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Salary range: $220,000-$300,000 per annum. Applications close on September 12, 2025. Submit via https://academicjobsonline.org/ajo/jobs/30204, including cover letter, CV, research statement, teaching statement, diversity statement, and references.
