About the opportunity

The Carbon Analyst will be a member of Australian Antarctic Program Partnership (AAPP)’s project 5: Biogeochemistry, and will support at-sea biogeochemical sensor calibration, sample analysis, data synthesis and quality control. 

The position entails the preparation of specialised marine sampling equipment for AAPP field programs in accordance with stringent cleanliness standards; the processing, documentation and chemical analysis of collected samples; the implementation of rigorous quality control procedures; the compilation and assembly of data for dissemination through the Australian Ocean Data Network; and the preparation of safety protocols and technical reports.

What you’ll do:

Assisting with the preparation of sampling equipment (e.g. sediment traps) for research voyages, including those conducted in collaboration with the Australian Antarctic Division and CSIRO.

Analysing the dissolved and particulate samples from seawater collected as part of the IMOS Southern Ocean Time Series (SOTS), ensuring compliance with internal quality control standards.

Day-to-day laboratory organisation of supplies, consumables and equipment ensuring alignment to the UTAS/IMAS Health, Safety and Environment framework.

Producing data products derived from mooring and shipboard observations.

Developing coding routines to automate data entry, processing, and quality control procedures associated with sample analyses.

Contributing to the processing of oceanographic sensor data, including quality control and data flagging in line with established protocols.

Maintaining an up-to-date database of archival samples and analytical results, including records required for quarantine purposes.

What we’re looking for:

Experience with sampling, processing and chemical analyses, to high and exacting international standards in an efficient and productive manner.

Demonstrated ability to independently follow a multi-step protocol with attention to detail to generate results at the expected standard.

Demonstrated ability in record-keeping (including hand-written and transcribed electronic notes) to ensure reproducibility of results.

Experience with data processing and computer programming (e.g., working with large datasets, data visualisation, netcdf, GitHub).

Demonstrated ability to work both independently and seek assistance when required.

A science degree (or equivalent experience) in a relevant field (e.g., chemistry, environmental science, oceanography, geochemistry, or similar).

Salary details

Appointment to this role will be at HEO 5 and will have a total remuneration package of up to $105,665 comprising base salary within the range of $80,869 to $90,312 plus 17% superannuation.
