James Cook University (JCU) is seeking a skilled and motivated Project Data Officer to support high‑quality environmental and ecological data management within the Research Infrastructure Directorate.

About the role

The Project Data Officer is responsible for ensuring the quality, integrity and reliability of environmental and ecological datasets that underpin major research projects. The role develops and maintains data workflows, supports the implementation of metadata and data standards, and works closely with project teams to deliver accurate, high‑quality data for research and reporting.

Key responsibilities

  • Develop workflows and automated scripts for processing, quality control and delivery of environmental and ecological data.
  • Conduct systematic data audits to ensure datasets meet required quality and metadata standards.
  • Train and support project investigators and field teams in data collection, metadata standards and data delivery workflows.
  • Contribute to the design and implementation of data processing pipelines and data management strategies.
  • Support project milestones by coordinating data‑related activities and monitoring workflow progress.

About you

You will bring:

  • Qualifications and experience aligned with HEWL 6.
  • Demonstrated experience working with environmental or ecological data, including data wrangling, analysis and visualisation (Python, R, GIS).
  • Familiarity with data and metadata standards used in environmental, ecological and biodiversity research.
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills, with intellectual curiosity and patience for reconstructing data context.
  • Well‑developed communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment.
