- Remuneration: $95,981 to $108,257 pa (HEW5) (inclusive of $81,105 to $91,478 salary pa, 17% superannuation and 17.5% recreation leave loading)
- Location: Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct
- Open to: Current staff members of QUT who have unrestricted work rights in Australia for the duration of the fixed-term appointment. Who are we looking for?
We are seeking a Workshop Technician, Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct to join Research Infrastructure, Research Portfolio, Academic Division.
The Workshop Technician supports the safe and effective operation of workshop facilities at the Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct, enabling pilot scale and applied research in civil engineering, industrial biotechnology and energy storage. Working under general direction, the role provides hands on technical support to researchers, staff and students through the operation, maintenance and setup of workshop equipment, fabrication and assembly activities, and assistance with experimental and pilot scale infrastructure. The position contributes to a flexible, service focused research environment by applying established technical knowledge, supporting safe systems of work, and working collaboratively across multiple research activities within the precinct.

The Research Engineering Facility (REF) provides cutting-edge research engineering and technology services including experimental hardware design, systems integration, software engineering and proof-of-concept validation and testing. Capabilities span drones and aviation, robotics and autonomous systems, energy systems, design and systems integration, structural engineering and testing, and data acquisition, processing and management.
REF’s Banyo Pilot Plant Precinct (BPPP) hosts scaled-up research in civil engineering, industrial biotechnology, and energy storage applications, testing and validation.
The precinct comprises three warehouse buildings, with specialized laboratories, workshops and enabling engineering infrastructure. It is suited to enable pilot scale research activities across a wide range of research domains, with projects conducted on an activity-based schedule allowing for flexibility and redeployment of space as research priorities evolve and mature..
What you need to succeed
- Education, training and or experience equivalent to completion of an associate diploma with at least two years subsequent relevant experience, or a post trade or advanced certificate with extensive relevant experience, or an equivalent combination of qualifications and experience
- Demonstrated experience working in a mechanical or technical workshop environment supporting engineering, scientific or applied research activities, with the ability to apply standard technical training and experience to solve routine to moderately complex problems under general direction
- Demonstrated experience or willingness to obtain relevant licences and competencies to operate workshop and site equipment including gantry crane, forklift, elevated work platform, lifting and rigging, welding, cutting and folding equipment, lathe, mill, drill and other workshop machinery.
- Well-developed interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with researchers, students, colleagues and external stakeholders, and to prepare clear and accurate technical records and documentation. Training will be provided as required
- Demonstrated knowledge of workplace health and safety principles and the ability to follow and contribute to safe systems of work, including risk assessments, safe operating procedures and inductions in a workshop or pilot plant environment.
