Career Counselor Officer
Position Summary:
Rutgers University-Newark, an urban public research university and anchor institution located in Newark, New Jersey—a city of promise—is seeking a Law School Career Counseling Officer. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Career Development, the Career Counselor Officer plays a critical role in the management and supervision of the daily operations of the Center for Career Development.
This position is responsible for and not limited to the following:
- Plays a key role in career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, with particular emphasis on employer relations and part-time student and alumni counseling
- Career counseling and professional development assistance to law students and graduates, developing and implementing a wide range of programs, events, and activities aimed at increasing the knowledge base of students and alumni, as well as the overall visibility of the law school in the broader legal community, and developing and implementing the law school's employer outreach program
- Work independently within broadly defined work objectives
- Performs professional work that requires specialized knowledge of legal education, general knowledge of numerous diverse practice settings and practice areas, and practical and innovative job search techniques and strategies
- Effectively develops and manages marketing outreach strategies to encourage employers to hire law school students and graduates;
- Independently identifies strategic and geographic growth areas and develops best practices and innovative outreach programs to establish and enhance recruiting relationships, with a particular emphasis on large law firms;
- Represents and markets the law school through on- and off-campus employer visits;
- Actively engages with bar associations and other professional groups, including regularly attending programs and events;
- Supports employer diversity initiatives through outreach with the Minority Student Program and the law school's student affinity groups.
Minimum Education and Experience:
Requires a Bachelor's degree and a minimum of three (3) years of experience that demonstrates knowledge and understanding of career counseling theories and methodologies for individuals and groups, career development,career coaching/advising, talent development, or similar experience, preferably in a law school environment.
